  1. Important Dates October 16 6-9 FARLEY FALL FEST October 20 PTO Meeting 7 PM October 30 1/2 Day of School 12:20 dismissal First Grade Scarecrow Concert at 10:00 …all first graders will sing some autumn songs dressed as scarecrows! November 3 Pinckney Schools Bond Election..go on the school website to find all the great things Farley will receive from the bond! Picture Retake Day AND… OCTOBER BOOK IT sheet due This week our Scholastic News magazine was about fall. We completed many activities to go with our Scholastic News. Some Scholastic News magazines have been sent home. Keep them in a special book bag at home so that your child can practice reading at home for their Book It minutes. Everyone has new book bag books. We are practicing our reading strategies…look at the picture, chunk the word into smaller words you know, re-read to help it make sense, etc. The kids are really excited about their new books. We read two articles this week in our National Geographic Magazines. One article was about leaves, and the other article was about spider webs. The kids practiced searching for words they knew how to read before reading the articles. We reviewed words that they didn’t know before reading as well. This helps them become familiar with the text and to build confidence. They read these articles with their reading buddies. They learned about leaves throughout the seasons in one article and different kinds of spider webs in the other. We wrote some spider web facts together that each child published and illustrated. In writing we are working on “say it, sketch it, and write it”. They say their story plan for their beginning, middle and end, sketch it out on their paper, and then write their stories. This helps them to think through their story and how it will go on their paper before they write. They write in three page booklets. One page is for the beginning of the story, one is for the middle, and the last one is for the ending. This has helped them to organize their story and add details to each part of the story. We are really impressed with their progress in writing. Thank you so much to all of our parent helpers. We couldn’t do half of the things we do without your help! We appreciate it. Renee Johnson and Cindy Lyons are coordinating the Halloween party. If you signed up to send something in or help, they will be contacting you. We have some fun things planned.
