PADI Instructor Development Process • What are the steps in the PADI Instructor Development process? • IDC — two components Assistant Instructor (AI) course and Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program • AI course— minimum of 3 days • Introduces teaching techniques for skill and knowledge development • Concentrates on programs AIs may conduct • Completing course qualifies you to continue on to OWSI program

PADI Instructor Development Process • Steps in process . . . • OWSI program— minimum of 4 days • Introduces the entire PADI System • Focuses on further developing abilities as a professional dive educator • Completing this program qualifies you to attend a PADI Instructor Examination (IE) • AI course and OWSI program both emphasize learning and development – not evaluation

  14. PADI Instructor Development Process • Steps in process . . . • Instructor Examination (IE)— serves as an objective evaluation of your skills and knowledge • IEs are conducted by PADI Office staff

PADI Instructor Development Process • What are the goals of the Instructor Development Course? • Prepare you to function as an instructor • You gain knowledge, skills and teaching techniques to use PADI System effectively • Focus is on “real world” application • You measure performance throughout program and improve abilities • There's no maximum number of attempts to reach performance requirements • Passing an IE is necessary to become an OWSI, however it’s not the primary focus — it’s a result of preparation

PADI Instructor Development Process • Goals of IDC . . . • Encourage you to be an active PADI Member and contributor to the growth and success of the dive industry • As a dive professional, you need to contribute to diving’s positive image and growth • Being a good instructor is only one component of being a dive professional — understanding the business of diving is crucial • We’ll discuss economic, social, cultural, legal, governmental and environmental concerns • We’ll explore marketing and customer service issues

  17. PADI Instructor Development Process • Goals of IDC . . . • Encourage you to be an advocate for the aquatic environment and emphasize awareness and conservation • Project AWARE’s continued success depends on your support • Your awareness and respect for the aquatic environment is expected

PADI Instructor Development Process • If you are crossing over to PADI . . .A goal is to provide you with the opportunity to see what the PADI System offers • We recognize that you are already an instructor with teaching skills • OWSI program is an orientation to the PADI System — reviews course scope and conduct • Allows you to try new techniques and tools, and explore new ideas and trends • Keep an open mind — PADI System is flexible • You decide to attend an IE and become a PADI Instructor after you have a good look at PADI

PADI Instructor Development Process • What are the performance requirements for the Assistant Instructor Course? • Complete independent study in Workbook prior to the course • Attend 6curriculum presentations • Give at least 2 confined water presentations, 2 knowledge development presentations, and 1 open water presentation integrating 2 skills • At least 1 presentation must meet minimum scores • Confined water –3.4 • Knowledge development –3.5 • Open water –3.5

PADI Instructor Development Process • Performance requirements for AI Course . . . • Pass a PADI System, Standards and Procedures Exam – 75% or higher • Successfully complete a skill evaluation – score at least a 3.0 on 20 skills • This is a performance based developmental process – you’ll have several opportunities to reach these scores

PADI Instructor Development Process • What are the performance requirements for the OWSI program? • Complete independent study in Workbook prior to the course • Attend 13curriculum presentations • Give at least 2 confined water presentations, 2 knowledge development presentations, and 1 open water presentation integrating 2 skills • At least 1 presentation must meet minimum scores • Confined water –3.4 • Knowledge development –3.5 • Open water –3.5

PADI Instructor Development Process • Performance requirements for OWSI program • Participate in Adventure Dive and Rescue Diver Course workshops • Pass a five-part dive theory exam – 75% or higher on each part • Successfully complete a skill evaluation – score at least a 3.0 on 20 skills • Complete 800 metre/yard continuous mask, snorkel, fin swim • This is a performance based developmental process – you’ll have several opportunities to reach these scores

PADI Instructor Development Process • What can you expect at a PADI Instructor Examination? • IE is an evaluative two-day program • You demonstrate teaching ability, rescue ability and understanding of PADI System and dive theory • IE is pass-fail • Examiners are helpful, but primary job is to evaluate performance • No coaching at IE – you must go fully prepared • After completion of OWSI components, you receive authorization to attend an IE • You make the final decision

PADI Instructor Development Process • What steps should you take after your PADI Instructor Development training? • Stay current • Continue your education • Enroll in MEDIC FIRST AID Instructor course and PADI Specialty Instructor training programs • Earn the Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating and enroll in IDC Staff Instructor training • Take business-related courses and acquire additional qualifications

Logistics and Schedule • What materials and equipment are required for the course? • Most often used –Instructor Candidate Workbook and PADI Instructor Manual • Note taking during presentations and other tools to assist you • Look over the relevant presentations and associated Knowledge Reviews prior to class • Need to have other PADI manuals, slates, videos and reference books, etc. • Scuba equipment and appropriate exposure protection –streamline
