Net100 Status Update: TCP Optimizations and Network Tool Evaluations (March 26, 2002)

This document provides an overview of the activities and focus areas for the first year of the ORNL Net100 project as of March 26, 2002. Key highlights include TCP optimizations, network tool evaluations using various metrics, and ongoing bulk transfer optimization efforts between NERSC and ORNL. The agenda covers progress since the last meeting, current work in progress, and future needs. It also details the integration of web100 tuning for HSI transfers and the evaluation tests conducted on Linux 2.4 systems, alongside planned outreach efforts to engage with the broader community.

  1. ORNL Net100 status March 26, 2002

  2. ORNL Net100 • Focus Areas (first year) • TCP optimizations (WAD, AIMD, VMSS, ns, atou) • Network tool evaluation (iperf, webd, java/web100) • Bulk transfer optimization (NERSC/ORNL) • Today’s agenda • Activities since Denver meeting • Current activities / WAD status • Future work/needs • Nagi’s update

  3. ORNL activities since Denver meeting • Web100 tuning (manual) of HSI transfer (NERSC/ORNL), SC2001 • NISTNet testbed • SCTP study/report • autotuning WAD (version 0) • TCP tuning (AIMD, VMSS) with ns and atou • Web100 event notification • Evaluation of Linux 2.4 tuning • DRS testing (ESnet, NISTNet), integration with Web100 (2.4.16) • TCP Vegas testing/porting (ns, Linux, atou) • atou tech report • Outreach: Net100 talks, web pages

  4. AIMD and Virtual MSS experiments experiments with atou between NERSC and ORNL

  5. WAD • Version 0 • tune unknowing sender/receiver • static config file with “tuning info” • tuned parallel iperf flows • To be done (year 1) • V1: use netlogger data to get tuning data (like Enable) at start of flow • add AIMD/VMSS tuning to kernel and tuning info to config file • systematic tests • V2: tune during flow, using web100 polling and data from remote WAD

  6. Rest of year ... • WAD enhancement and testing • integration of metrics with tuning • webd integration ? • SC2002 paper prep • gridftp tuning (or other bulk transfer demo ??) • TCP optimization studies (AIMD, Vegas, ?) • AIX web100 port ? • ESnet jumbo frame and ECN tests ? • ESnet router data ? • Addition of postdoc • Outreach: ESnet ESCC meeting (April), Internet2 (Jul/Aug), SC2002
