  1. THE StudY OF ESCHATOLOGYDr. Ronald C. Hill, Sr. May 30, 2012 @ 7:30pm June 2, 2012 @ 9:00am

  2. What is Eschatology?

  3. 1. It is the study of end-time events. It concerns the ultimate or last things such as death and life after death.

  4. 2. Eschatology can be divided into two broad areas: Personal and General Eschatology

  5. a) General eschatology covers the sweep of future events, from the return of Jesus Christ on through to the creation of the new heaven and new earth.

  6. b) Personal eschatology relates to the individual, from the time of physical death until he receives his resurrection-body

  7. 1. Personal eschatology can be considered under two headings: Physical death and the Intermediate state.

  8. Physical death is not to be confused with spiritual or eternal death. Spiritual death is that spiritual state in which one finds oneself before they receive Salvation.

  9. It is spoken of as being “dead” in trespasses and sins

  10. EPHESIANS 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins

  11. EPHESIANS 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)

  12. B.A person is considered spiritually dead before he comes alive in Christ at the point of Salvation.

  13. On the other hand, eternal death is that eternal judgment which comes at death upon those who have never been made spiritually alive through making Jesus Lord of their lives.

  14. It is the eternal judgment of God, which comes upon those who have never in their lifetime passed out of death into life.

  15. JOHN 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

  16. REVELATIONS 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

  17. C. This is called the second death, the lake of fire

  18. REVELATIONS 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

  19. D. Spiritual death and eternal death relate to the soul; physical death has to do with the body. Physical death is the separation of the soul from the body; it is the termination of physical life.

  20. ECCLESIASTES 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

  21. ACTS 7:59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

  22. ACTS 7:60 • And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

  23. JAMES 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

  24. E. Death should not, however, be thought of as annihilation, cessation of being, or nonexistence. Rather, it is a change of relationships.

  25. There is a severance of the natural relationship between soul and body. The body decays in the grave and returns to dust, and the soul continues on.

  26. GENESIS 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

  27. F. Physical death bears a relationship to sin because Adam was not subject to physical death until after the fall into sin. Physical death then is the result of man’s spiritual death.

  28. ROMANS 5:21 • That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

  29. ROMANS 6:23 • For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  30. G. Physical death is a judgment

  31. ROMANS 1:32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

  32. ROMANS 5:15-17 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace,

  33. ROMANS 5:15-17 which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift:

  34. ROMANS 5:15-17 for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one;

  35. ROMANS 5:15-17 much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

  36. H. Physical death is also a curse

  37. HEBREWS 2:14-15 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same;

  38. HEBREWS 2:14-15 that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

  39. HEBREWS 2:14-15 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

  40. I. Though death is a common enemy, through Christ the believer needs no longer to fear it. Death for the believer is entrance into the presence of Christ.

  41. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

  42. J. Death to the believer is “to depart and be with the Lord”.

  43. PHILIPPIANS 1:23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better

  44. K. The sting of death has been removed.

  45. 1CORINTHIANS 15:55-57 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

  46. 1CORINTHIANS 15:55-57 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  47. 1. Verse fifty-five may well be a "taunt song" that believers sing as they rise to meet the Lord in the air. It is as if they mock death because for them it has lost the battle to keep them as its own.

  48. Death holds no terror for them because they know their sins have been forgiven and they stand before God in all the acceptability of His beloved Son.

  49. 2. The believer simply falls asleep in Jesus.

  50. 1 THESSALONIANS 4:13-14 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
