  1. Lumbar Support Cushion to Provide Continuous Passive Motion Client: Julie Sherry Advisor: Kreg Gruben Team Members: Anthony Nelson, Mike Hallam, Dan Hartman

  2. Presentation Overview • Problem Definition • Background Information • Product Design Specifications • Possible Designs • Selected Design • Future Work

  3. Problem Statement • Must support lumbar vertebrae • Provide continuous passive motion • Variable settings for passive motion • Must operate in automobile environment • Can’t distract driver in any way

  4. Background Information • Human spine not well adapted for sitting • Bucket seats cause instability and discomfort in the lumbar spine • Present treatment – use of wedge for pelvis alignment • Typically occurs between 25-40 years old • Continuous passive motion

  5. Product Design Specifications • Provide needed support to lumbar spine • Powered by cigarette lighter or battery • Adjustable to variable sized car seats • Non-distracting to driver • Provide continuous passive motion • Variable cycles for passive motion

  6. Design Alternatives • One-bladder air cushion • Multiple bladder air cushion attachments • Mechanical oscillating roll

  7. One-bladder air cushion • One air cushion • Inflates and deflates in cycles • Connected to an air pump • Supports lower back

  8. Multiple bladder air cushion • Two different attachment surfaces • Velcro surfaces on cylindrical bladders • Different sized bladders • Existing lumbar roll or seat • Junction box to offset inflation rate

  9. Multiple bladder air cushion

  10. Mechanical oscillating roll • Two parallel tracks • Support cushion between tracks • Motorized motion • Non-friction surface inside of the cover • Velcro seat attachment

  11. Proposed Solution • Multiple bladders attached to existing lumbar cushion • Incorporate wedge on seat • Delivers continuous passive motion • Most feasible design • Incorporates existing products

  12. Proposed Solution

  13. Future Work • Find pump for suggested power supply • Find materials for bladder • Air connections – varying inflation rates • Find comfortable range of lumbar support
