This presentation by Vicky Upton, Injury Prevention Programme Manager at ACC, outlines the comprehensive strategies aimed at preventing falls among various age groups, specifically focusing on working age adults (25-64 years). It highlights the significant economic impact of falls, with costs exceeding $1.84 billion in 2010, and underscores that falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations. By employing a program structured around education, environment, engineering, enforcement, and economic incentives, ACC is targeting a 10% reduction in falls over ten years. The presentation also seeks collaboration for Safety Week 2012 to raise awareness and motivate behavior change.

This presentation • Provide overview of ACC’s programmes to prevent falls • Focus on working age falls • We’d like your help with Safety Week 2012
What’s the problem? • Estimated social and economic cost of falls in 2010 was $1.84 billion • Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisations each year • Many people believe it’s only older people and children who fall • Active working age adults also fall so we have a programme focusing on them as well as older adults and children
ACC’s falls programmes • Older adults (65+ years) - Vitamin D – residential care & community - Exercise programmes • Children (0-19 years) - Focus on unintentional falls - Working through key stakeholders on prevention programmes • Working age adults (25-64 years) - Idea Nation
Working age falls • WAP (25-64 year olds) account for 40% of home falls claims but 60% of the cost • Over 100,000 home falls - $164m per year • 10,000 people per year receive weekly comp • 3,000 require more than three months off • Less than 10% of claims account for half the cost
What is our approach? • WAP falls is a long-term programme with a gutsy goal – 10% reduction in falls over ten years • The programme plan is structured around the four Es framework • Unregulated environment – limited opportunities for enforcement levers • Few evidence-based interventions therefore we are using Idea Nation to find solutions • Motivate behaviour change through social marketing
WAP falls framework EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT& ENGINEERING ENFORCEMENT ECONOMIC Social marketing Safety Week Specific channels, e.g. real estate agents & DIY retailers Community trials Work with govt on engineering/ housing changes Review existing interventions Influence legislation & policy Review products & quality standards Encourage industry self-regulation Explore economic incentives Safety Week Idea Nation ideas
