Opening Ceremony • Three Phases over the course of the school year: • 1st Phase: • Set up of the Olympic Village in the classroom • The game rules • Presentation of books by genre • Try-outs (student gives rationale for the book they chose) • This first phase will focus on learning plot and plot devices

  4. The Long Haul • 2nd Phase: • Focus on Character devices • 3rd Phase: • Focus on Theme

The Rules • Students will be expected to read 3-4 books per school year as part of the program. • As each phase begins, one class period will be spent explaining the main topic of the phase (plot, character, theme,) and making sure students become familiar with these elements as they begin new books. • They will be allowed to decide which books they want to read, but must give a brief spoken rationale for their choice. This encourages students to think about the way they think about their choices. • The Olympic Village corner of the room will be the headquarters for the athletes to keep track of their progress via a score board. Each student will be given a torch that they move along the score board to acknowledge miles ran (pages read).

  6. The Rules Continued… • Half way through each book, the athlete must do a check in with the judges. This qualifier can be in the form of a paper, a presentation, or other project. • At the end of each book, a short paper (2-3 pages) will be turned in that focuses on Plot, Character, or Theme, depending on which phase of the year we are in.

  7. Final Project The Interview! Upon the completion of each book the athlete will need to do a project that demonstrates two basic requirements, knowledge of the book as well as the phase focus; Plot, Character, & Theme. This project is an on screen interview. The student can be the interviewee or interviewer. It will be videotaped and played for the class. It can be as simple or complex as they want, as long as the two basic requirements are present. No longer than 10-15 min. Creativity is greatly encouraged.
