  2. Flowing Facts • Gravity causes water to flow downhill, as it runs fast, it sculpts the terrain • Snaking its way through, the water comes from a drainage basin, the land from which a river system begins • The immense Mississippi has the largest drainage basin, which spans nearly two-thirds of the country! • A barrage of rocks that have accumulated at the river floor have become smooth and soft to the touch

  3. Natural Disasters • Hurricanes cause the rivers to rise and eventually flood the town • Tornadoes cause the rivers to rise and swirl and eventually cause damage to the tall buildings • Earthquakes cause buildings to fall into the rivers and cause the rivers to throw water at the standing buildings and ruin them

  4. Weathering and Erosion • When weathering occurs, groundwater comes to the earth’s thin crust, and the liquid oozes onto the dirt • Where droughts are, and where it rains, the ground moves apart, and this causes water from the ground to seep through

  5. Extreme Weathering • Hurricanes cause major erosion, the rain and wind demolishing the terrain • Rivers kick up and take the ground with them • Water is capable of forming ravines and mountains, with its strong force

  6. Micro Weathering • Little by little the bodies of water eat away at the crust of the earth • Some rivers have gone as far as joining up with groundwater under the subsoil of earth

  7. Thinking Questions (????) • How does gravity have an effect on water? • What is water capable of ? • What happens when weathering occurs ?
