  1. MODERN & INGIDENOUS MEDICINE A 4-Week Rotation for Medical StudentsFeaturing Integrative Medicine for the Underserved in Kenya

Learning Objectives • Experience the long heritage of Integrative Medicine as practiced by indigenous cultures • Encourage dialogue with medical practitioners in Kenya • Develop a broader sense of cultural competency • Observe and develop existing clinical skills • Broaden public health knowledge • Develop creativity in problem-solving • Deepen a commitment to service

  3. Proposed Educational Activities • Orientation upon arrival, including cultural adjustment exercises & team building • Ongoing interactions with medical director and coordinator • Weekly lectures in the fields of AIDS, physical disability, public health care of Kenya, and integrative medicine • Clerkship days as described in itinerary, including inpatient, clinic, and ambulatory • Off-site activities by 4-wheel or walking / hiking, and tent and cabin sleeping, sometimes by group accommodation • Post-trip debrief materials and reflective discussion

  4. Who can go? • 4th and 3rd years* from Western U can reserve a spot first. • *3rd years must have vacation/elective at this time. Cannot change core rotations. • Students’ partners & family are welcome to join • Activities can be arranged during clinical days, some with additional cost • Maasai warrior treks • Other volunteering activities may be arranged in schools, childrens’ activity programs etc. • After Dec 10th, other students and professionals will be invited • Application process is simple, with 50% deposit due on booking, balance due 6 weeks before trip (February 25) • Western University credit is involved in the process

  6. Travel & Orientation • Wed 4th – Fri 6th • Arrive Nairobi through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport • Stay at the Wildebeest Camp • Eco-tourism and excursions to wildlife centers and local tour sites Orientation: Team building, roles, curriculum & expectations, & cultural sensitivities

  7. Nairobi: Wildebeest Camp • Groups of 4-6 Dorm style rooms or shared Safari Tents • Upgrades to single or double rooming can be arranged

  8. Kijabe, Kenya • Sat 7th – Fri 14th • CURE Hospital • International Guesthouse, 2-4 per room • 6 days in CLINICAL, including surgical inpatient, orthopedic clinic outpatient • 3 days OFF

  10. Maji Moto Village • Mon 16th – Mon 23rd • 6 days TRADITIONAL MEDICINE and VILLAGE CLINIC • 3 days FREE

  11. Maji Moto Village • Stay in guest village • Small rural clinic • Learn traditional medicine with tribal healers and immersion with villagers • Hikes, medicinal harvest, ceremonies, shamanic medicine, warrior treks

In Kenya, in Swahili, we don’t have the word “stranger.” So are Guests – Wageni. You will be very happy when you are going to book this trip and come with us.

  17. Talek Riverside Camp • 2 people per cabin with flush toilet and hot shower • Overlooking the Talek river • Walking distance to clinic

  18. Travel back to Nairobi • On the last day, we'll drive from Talek to Nairobi in the morning (about 4-5 hours), then return to Wildebeest for rest, showers, lunch etc. as people await flights home.

  19. Can my companion book too? • Yes! • Option for all 4 weeks or 2 week trip (non-clinical only) • Opportunities to contribute, relax, or tour • Prices will depend on interest for this option

  20. Cost • 12+ travelers $3100 • 6 – 11 travelers $3400 • 2 week option for companions $1900

Includes: • All ground transportation for locations outlined in the itinerary • All meals and lodging as presented in the itinerary • Activities in the itinerary, including conservation experiences, Maasai cultural activities, wildlife driving safari, nature walks • Clinic supervision and opportunity for academic credit • Pre-trip informational session • Does not include: • Air fare, tips, immunizations, visas, alcohol & personal purchases • Mandatory travelers medical insurance • Personal-use medical equipment such as stethoscope, ophthalmoscope, otoscope, scrubs, or gloves. Please bring these items along with your white coat.
