  1. Factors that Shape NationalismResponses to Factors that Shape Nationalism • Nations are often held together by shared memories and experiences • For the French, the people developed a collective identity out of shared memories of specific events during the French Revolution • Post-Revolutionary slogans like “Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite!” became national symbols of the French • After the storming of the Bastille, people began to wear Red, White, and Blue badges and clothing to symbolize the revolution, those colors would eventually become the colors of the national flag.

  2. Factors that Shape NationalismNational Stories and Realities • A nation’s stories or myths are propogated by the dominant cultural group • In 1789, The French citizens rejected an absolute monarch and decided to base its government on the principles of Liberty, Equality, and Brotherhood • Today however, some people question the validity of the story. The reality is different from the story. • As in many countries, immigrants to France have and continue to face racism and prejudice even if they originate in a former French colony.

  3. Factors that Shape NationalismChanges in National Identity • When a national identity is facing change, people can tend to feel threatened and can cause controversy • When France’s Muslim minority wanted to allow girls to wear a hijab in schools, the French felt like it was a threat to their non-secular national identity (the separation of church and state) • In 2004, the French government passed a “ conspicuous religious apparel” law, banning any and all religious clothing and outerwear from schools.

  4. Factors that Shape NationalismCanadian Responses to Factors that Shape Nationalism • The Canadian Pacific Railway is an event that has ingrained itself into the Canadian Collective. • The CPR was instrumental in uniting Canada from coast to coast • The builders of the railroad suffered many obstacles including mosquito infested swamps, vast plains, and huge mountain ranges • When the building was all done, many Canadians felt proud of their accomplishment. This made the CPR a national symbol. • Listen to the lyrics from the Song “The Canadian Railway Trilogy” by Gordon Lightfoot. What can you tell from the lyrics about the story of the building of the CPR. • For many Canadians, the building of the CPR was heroic and a moment of national pride. Does the life of the Navvies influence your perceptions of the National Myth of the CPR?

  5. Factors that Shape NationalismChallenges: • For much of the Canadian identity, the story is told from the eyes of the British, British History, the Union Jack, etc • Today, we see conflicting stories told from other national identities within Canada. • The Francophone, Aboriginal, the story of the settlement of the west
