CONTEXT CLUES. Ms. Houlihan Speech and Language 2011-2012. When you come across a word you don’t know, use context clues to help you figure out the meaning. Context clues are the other words in the sentence that give you clues about the word’s meaning. Let’s try some examples.

  6. Now…. • 1) Pick a word • 2) Use it in a sentence • 3) Be sure to write context clues to help your reader figure out the meaning • Example: I chose the word “petrified.” • “The girl was petrified in the haunted house.
