INTRODUCTION • One of the greatest emphases of the • Word of God is that God is a Savior. • Exodus 15:2- • “ The Lord is my strength and song, • and he is become my salvation…” • Isaiah 45:15- • “Verily, thou art the God who hideth thyself, O God of Israel the Savior” • Joel 2:9- • “ Salvation is of the Lord”

  3. When we think of God as the Savior- • look at the Cross, • But when Israel thought of God as the Savior • they focused on Psalm 105. • Psalm 105- is the recitation of God’s • deliverance of Israel from the bondage of • Egypt for 400 yrs.

God wanted to be remembered as the Savior, • so instituted the PASSOVER- ( Exodus 12) • Annual event for the Jews all over the world • Touchstone for their definition of God- redeeming God. • Feast of Commemoration ( like the Communion Service) • Unleavened bread- sign of haste • Bitter herb- Life is bitter in Egypt

  5. QUESTION: WHY IS THE PASSOVER IS SUCH A DRAMATIC PICTURE OF GOD’S SAVING POWER? • Egypt as a very powerful nation • Educated nation • Has powerful hold in the world • Not easy to knock it off ( 400 yrs in Egypt the Hebrews were helpless)

  6. LETS US LOOK AT THE ENCOUNTER • ( GOD VERSUS gods) • v-10 Message-‘LET MY PEOPLE GO” • -Serpent versus the serpents. (not illusion) • PLAGUES- every single plague was directed to • the false gods of Egypt

  7. 1.POLLUTED WATER- (7:14-18) • Nile River • - The life blood of the nation • - Heartbeat of Egypt

  8. 1.POLLUTED WATER- (7:14-18) • Gods of Egypt: • Kunuhm- guardian god of the Nile • Hapi- spirit of the Nile - god of the crocodile • Osiris- god of the underworld • Nith- god of the largest fish, “leties” • Hator- god of the rest of the fish

  9. 2. FROGS- (8:1-4) • - These are deified in Egypt • - Covered all the lands • Heqt- Egyptian god of the frogs • (wife of Kanuhm) guardian god of • the Nile

  10. 3. KNATS- ( 8:16-19) • Hebrew word • - means mosquitoes, lice 4. FLIES- (20-32) ( swarm flies) • Yuwasit- god of the flies 5. ANIMALS’ DEATH (9:1-7) • ( Loss of personal property) • -they worshipped the bulls

  11. 6. PLAGUE OF BOILS (9:13-35) • gods: • a. Sacmith- god responsible to prevent diseases • b. Soono- god who has as special priesthood, • -wears amulets to ward off diseases. • c. Serapes- god of healing • d. Amenhoteph- god of medicine

  12. 7. HAIL AND FIRES- ( 9:13-35) • gods: • Knut- sky goddess • Set, Isis- 2 gods responsible for the crops • 8. LOCUST (10:1-20) • Set & Isis- gods to protect the crops

  13. 9. DARKNESS (10:21-23) • gods: • Ra or Re- sun-god • Amonra- sun- god • Athum- god of the setting sun

  14. 10.DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN • (11:1-36) • Lesson: • How hard the heart of man is- who don’t know God. • When God wants His people to go, He will let His people go. • God does not want His people to forget His deliverance (Passover).
