  3. The INTERREG context • Water management projects exist under all strands of INTERREG • Different types of projects according to the strand (A, B or C) European Seminar on water management

The INTERREG context Strand A: crossborder cooperation • Geographically restricted • Local implementations and specialised approaches possible • Examples of projects - GIHM (Integrated management of the ‘Haine’ river) INTERREG A France / Belgium ERDF: €472,910 - Cross border river contract ‘Segre’ INTERREG A France / Spain ERDF: €360,000 European Seminar on water management

The INTERREG context Strand B: transnational cooperation • Broader in terms of eligible geographical area • Spatial planning approach; investment possible • Examples of projects - Urban Water(Sustainable water management in urban space) INTERREG B North West Europe ERDF: €5,950,288 - FORALPS (Meteo-Hydrological Forecast and Observations for improved water Resource management in the Alps) INTERREG B Alpine Space ERDF: €1,416,720 European Seminar on water management

Current and future challenges Under INTERREG, local implementations are possible only if the following two criteria are respected: • Interregionality criterion e.g. - transfer from one region to another - pilot experimentation benefiting all the partners • Additionality criterion Activities would not be supported without the INTERREG support European seminar on water management

  15. Current and future challenges Implementation of EU Directive • Not the purpose of INTERREG • Main contribution of INTERREG: - exchange of experiences - pilot experimentation European seminar on water management

Current and future challenges Capitalisation • High number of INTERREG projects dealing with water management • Necessity to share the lessons learnt and to build on the achieved results (not reinventing the wheel) • Even more important in the context of INTERREG IVC Conclusion: this seminar is a good starting point for preparing future interregional cooperation projects on water management European seminar on water management
