  1. Nature & Action of Repentance Luke 13:1-5

  2. Repentance Is Essential • Foundational to preaching from the beginning of the Gospel • Luke 24:47 • Acts 2:38 • Acts 3:19 • Demanded of all who obey God • Acts 17:30-31

  3. Repentance Is Not • Just recognition of sin • Felix terrified by such (Acts 24:25) • Just acknowledgement of sin • Judas admitted his sin (Matt. 27:3-4) • Just a change of conduct • Mob ceased beating Paul (Acts 21:32) • None of these actions by itselfconstitutes biblical repentance

  4. Repentance Involves Change • Involves a change of mind, but not just: • Intellectual - that is faith (Heb. 11:6) • Relationship - that is Baptism (Gal. 3:26f) • Emotional - that is reaction to guilt of sin (Ezra 10:1) • Repentance is a change of mind which is accompanied by an amended life • Luke 3:7-14; Matthew 21:28-31 • Changes in true repentance…

  5. 2 Corinthians 7:10-11 10For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves, yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.

  6. Repentance & 2 Cor. 7 • Godly sorrow precedes repentance • due to recognition of sin against God • Causes “earnest care” • Causes “clearing” • Causes “indignation” • Causes “fear” • Causes “longing” • Causes “zeal” • Causes “avenging”

  7. Being Led To Repentance Sin: • Grieves God (Gen. 6:6; Matt. 23:37) • Shames God (Heb. 12:5-12) We are led to Bible repentance by the “goodnessof God” • Romans 2:4; 5:6-8 When we truly repent, we: • Never fail to fully admit & be ashamed of sin • Never recall past sins with longing or joy • Never think lightly of penalty paid for sin
