  2. Preparation time • Read and understand the passage. • Take notes to help you in your presentation. • Practise your presentation.

  3. Your notes should be: • Correct:Read the passage carefully. • Concise:Only note down the key words. • Clear:Write your notes in point form and keep them organised.

  4. Do not ... • Write down anything you don’t understand. • Write down any words you can’t pronounce. • Spend the whole 10 minutes preparing your notes.

  5. You are going to watch two presentations. Which one do you think is better?

  6. Presentation #1.

  7. Presentation #2

  8. And the winner is ... • Presentation #2 • Presentation #2 wasn’t perfect but … • It was more pleasant to listen to. • All the main ideas were mentioned. • It proved that the candidate can do more than just read the passage.

  9. The Mr. Marc Method Read a paragraph. Re-read the paragraph. Make brief notes while referring to the passage as little as possible. Make sure you understand the paragraph and re-read it if you don’t.

  10. The key is to spend more time understanding the passage and less time copying big chunks from it.

  11. If you prepare your notes well enough, you won’t even need them.

  12. Don’t forget to save some time to practise your presentation. At the very least, you should keep 2 minutes to practise your presentation.

  13. Click when you’re ready. Time to practise. You have 80 seconds to read the 1st paragraph of a passage. Don’t take any notes yet.

  14. Drinking alcohol(para. 1) Everyone knows that people who drive after drinking too much alcohol pose a great danger to innocent motorists and pedestrians. But alcohol can also be very dangerous in another way. For example, serious problems can arise if a person passes out or becomes unconscious after drinking heavily. Recently, a young Taiwanese woman died after drinking large amounts of alcohol at her own wedding reception. This tragic event highlights the danger of consuming too much alcohol at one time.

  15. How much do you remember? • What is the topic? • What is the first danger related to alcohol mentioned? • What can happen if a person drinks too heavily? • Does the paragraph give any examples?

  16. Try giving the presentation. • Drinking alcohol • About ... • Driving • Pass out • Taiwanese wedding - woman died • Too much - dangerous

  17. Mistakes we avoided: • Reading too much. • Using expressions we are not familiar with and which might not sound natural such as “pose a great danger to motorists...” • Mispronounce difficult words such as “unconscious”.
