  1. Links with other learning areas in Years 5–6 Core units: Key understandings Years 5–6 Illustration 1: Pointers to understanding

  2. What are the links between geography and other learning areas in Years 5–6? What things can a primary teacher introduce to students?

  3. ScienceYear 5 • Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment • The Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (the sun)

  4. MathematicsYear 5 • Use a grid reference system to describe locations. Describe routes using landmarks and directional language • Apply the enlargement transformation to familiar two-dimensional shapes and explore the properties of the resulting image compared with the original • Construct displays, including column graphs, dot plots and tables, appropriate for data type, with and without the use of digital technologies

  5. HistoryYear 5 • The reasons people migrated to Australia from Europe and Asia • The experiences and contributions of a particular migrant group within a colony.

  6. EnglishYear 5 • Use comprehension strategies to analyse information, integrating and linking ideas from a variety of print and digital sources • Understand how to move beyond making bare assertions and take account of differing perspectives and points of view • Clarify understanding of content as it unfolds in formal and informal situations, connecting ideas to students’ own experiences and present and justify a point of view • Plan, rehearse and deliver presentations for defined audiences and purposes incorporating accurate and sequenced content and multimodal elements

  7. ScienceYear 6 • Sudden geological changes or extreme weather conditions can affect earth’s surface • The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment

  8. MathematicsYear 6 • Interpret and compare a range of data displays, including side by side column graphs for two categorical variables • Interpret secondary data presented in digital media and elsewhere

  9. EnglishYear 6 • Identify and explain how analytical images like figures, tables, diagrams, maps and graphs contribute to our understanding of verbal information in factual and persuasive texts • Participate in and contribute to discussions, clarifying and interrogating ideas, developing and supporting arguments, sharing and evaluating information, experiences and opinions • Plan, rehearse and deliver presentations, selecting and sequencing appropriate content and multimodal elements for defined audiences and purposes, making appropriate choices for modality and emphasis
