Participial Phrases • Begin with verbs ending in –ed or –ing • Are used as adjectives • Are usually set off by commas • May be openers, splits, or closers, • Should be near the noun or pronoun they describe. • Which of these is a participial phrase? • Running down the hall, I crashed into Mr. Comalander. Oops! • I was running down the hall when I crashed into Mr. Comalander. Oops!

  3. Tuesday, March 19Today’s Objective: Today I will brainstorm ideas for an essay and practice writing a clear thesis. Participial Phrases Practice #1 – Write the first and last word of each phrase. • Arriving at the used-up haystack, the boy leaned against the barbed wire fence. • The snow swirled, blurring his vision. • A cloud shadow, drifting the breadth of Trial Valley, spread across the inscrutable face of Old Joshua. • Lying back in the soft hay, I folded my hands behind my head, closed my eyes, and let my mind wander back over the two long years. • Billy ate it offhand, sideways, reading a comic book. • Returning to the lab to put a bucket of water on the stove for dish washing, she noticed that Mitch was not at the computer, although it was turned on.

Write an essay explaining why hard work is necessary for success. • To write your thesis/controlling idea: • Turn the prompt into a question. • Answer the question. • Write a sentence that includes the topic of the prompt and your answer to the question. Make sure you include the word because in your thesis/controlling idea. • Remember, every thesis should have a topic and an opinion about the topic.

Write Two Introductions • Begin with what it is not • Create a metaphor. • Forgiveness is a warm blanket. • Begin with a surprising statement that utilizes anaphora. • I never expected to be forgiven when I lied. I never expected to be forgiven when I cheated. I never expected to be forgiven when I betrayed.

  9. Describe what the topic is not. • Forgiveness is neither a clanging cymbal nor a pounding drum. It is neither the crack of a gunshot nor the blare of a siren. It is always gentle but never loud. Forgiveness is simply a whisper. But forgiveness is more than gentle, more than a whisper. Forgiveness is important because in forgiving others, we help ourselves.

  10. Create a metaphor. • Forgiveness is a warm blanket. Soft and comforting, it warms us when the cold of worry and hurt weigh us down. When someone has hurt us, it can be difficult but necessary to forgive. Forgiveness is important because in forgiving others, we help ourselves.

  12. Thursday, March 21Today’s Objective: Today I will practice developing my ideas in a body paragraph so that I can make a convincing argument to my readers. I will show what I can do by writing a body paragraph. • WU: Phrases HW • Body paragraph structure • Write the body paragraph of your essay. • HW: Complete participial phrases practice.

  13. Sample Paragraph Topic Sentence The San Antonio Spurs are a good example of an organization whose hard work has led to success. E The Spurs had come close to winning an NBA title in the 1970s and again in the 1990s, but they were never able to achieve their goal. Then Coach Greg Popovich introduced the team to an idea from reformer Jacob Riis: A“Whennothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” In an interview several years later, D Coach Pop said, “… I thought it embodied anyone’s effort in any endeavor, really. It doesn’t have to be basketball. It can be a musical instrument or it can be learning mathematics or going to law school … you just keep looking, keep trying, keep going.” R Did this idea help the Spurs succeed? (closing sentence) In 1999, the Spurs split the rock and won their first championship, and they’ve been winning them ever since, clearly showing that it is hard work that leads to success.

Friday, March 22Today’s Objective: (B)  develop drafts by choosing an appropriate organizational strategy (e.g., sequence of events, cause-effect, compare-contrast) and building on ideas to create a focused, organized, and coherent piece of writing. • Turn in participial phrases homework. • JOV Quiz 8 • Conclusions • HW: Finish your rough draft!

Writing a good conclusion • DON’T repeat everything you’ve already said. • DON’T introduce new ideas. • DON’T begin with a clichéd transition, such as “in conclusion.” • DO restate your thesis in a different way. • DO connect to a universal idea: Why is this important to everyone everywhere in the world? • DO connect back to your hook. If you began with a metaphor, return to it. • DO give your reader something to think about.

  17. Sample concluding paragraph from an essay with this thesis: “ …my phone has started to interfere with the things that truly matter.” Ultimately, I end up becoming frustrated or annoyed because I didn’t complete an assignment, go to bed on time, or spend more times with someone. It’s more of a personal struggle to limit phone and entertainment use. And, sadly, I am representative of an entire generation. But saddest of all? Nothing of value or importance comes from this type of entertainment. As the expression goes: “The revolution will NOT be televised.”
