  1. Green Chemistry By Anthony R.

  2. What Is Green Chemistry? • Green Chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. • Green Chemistry relies on a set of 12 principles that can be used to design or re-design molecules, materials and chemical transformations to be safer for human health and the environment.

  3. What Are The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry? • 1. Prevent Waste Creation of knew ways to prevent the generation of hazardous waste, It is better to prevent waste than to treat or clean up waste after it has been created. • 2. Atom Economy Methods should be designed to maximize the incorporation of all materials used in the process into the final product. • 3. Design less Hazardous Chemical Synthesis Wherever possible, synthetic methods should be designed to make safer solutions that include little to no toxic materials, chemicals etc. These should pose a very small risk to human health and the environment.

  4. Continued. • 4. Design Safer Chemicals Chemical products should be designed to achieve there desired function while minimizing their toxicity. • 5. Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries Substances like solvents and separation agents should be avoided whenever possible and replaced with safer alternatives. • 6. Design for Energy Efficiency Avoid using energy requirements that have a potential to be environmentally and economically damaging. Instead use renewable methods.

  5. Continued. • 7. Use of Renewable Feedstock Whenever possible, chemical transformations should be designed to utilize raw materials and feed stocks that are renewable. • 8. Reduce Derivatives Any unnecessary chemical derivatives should be avoided whenever possible because this can create reagents which create more general waste. • 9. Catalysis Use catalysts whenever possible. • 10. Design for Degradation Biodegradable products should be designed so that at the end of their function they break down and do not persist in the environment.

  6. Continued. • 11. Real-time analysis for Pollution Prevention Methods need to be further developed to allow for real-time monitoring and control prior to the formation of hazardous substances. • 12. Safer Chemistry for Accident Prevention The potential for hazards such as gas releases, fires and explosions should be minimized as much as possible.

  7. Case Study - PYROCOOL • Over many years fire fighters have had access to many extinguishment agents, although having many benefits they have proven to lead to extensive long-term damage towards the environment and personal heath. This is were PYROCOOL comes into play. • PYROCOOL has developed a fire extinguishing foam that is non-toxic and happens to be highly biodegradable. Made from biodegradable surfactants, it is used as a universal extinguishment and cooling agent. • Replacing ozone-depleting gases and aqueous foams that release toxic and persistent chemicals into the environment during use. PYROCOOL F.E.F. is effective at approximately one-tenth of the concentration of conventional fire extinguishing chemicals.

  8. Case Study - PYROCOOL The benefits that arose from this green initiative are things like: • Help to cause less damage to the environment and personal health. • Used world wide so it’s also helping to cause less damage towards the ozone layer. • And other things…
