Pronoun Usage. ???????????????????????????. You learned what a pronoun was in the first grammar unit, but can you use them correctly? In this unit, you’ll learn how to properly use a pronoun. Words often change their form (example – girl is singular. Girls is plural. Girl’s is possessive.

  2. ??????????????????????????? • You learned what a pronoun was in the first grammar unit, but can you use them correctly? • In this unit, you’ll learn how to properly use a pronoun.

  3. Words often change their form (example – girlis singular. Girls is plural. Girl’sis possessive. • Pronouns often change form as well.

  4. Pronouns can be singular – she • Pronouns can be plural - they • Pronouns can be possessive - his

  5. Case Nominative – words used as subjects or predicate nominatives within the sentence • Objective – words used as objects within the sentence (like direct object, object of preposition) • Possessive – words that show that someone owns something

  6. Nom Obj Poss. • I me my, mine • We us our,ours • You you your, yours • He him his • She herher, hers • It it its • They them their, theirs • Who whom whose • Whoever whomever whosever

  7. Nominative • The nominative form of the pronoun is used as the subject. Wrong – Me went to the movies. Right – I went to the movies. Wrong – Jen and me went to the movies. Right – Jen and I went to the movies.

  8. Predicate nominatives • Do you remember P.N.s? A PN is used the same way you use the subject. It’s in the nominative case. • Tom is captain. Tom is he • The captain is Tom. He is Tom.

  9. Wrong – It was me on the phone. • Right – It was I on the phone. • Wrong – It could have been her to win the award. • Right – It could have been she to win the award.

  10. Pronoun as object • The objective pronoun form is used as direct or indirect object. • The principal wanted to see me in her office. • The counselor gave Jamie and me good advice. • Indirect object Direct object

  11. Practice • 1.The Johnsons and ( they, them) are in the club. • 2. Kerry and (she, her) are reading the same book. • 3. Jeff invited (they, them) to the show. • 4. The winner was (she, her). • 5. The school bus picked up (he, him) and (I, me).
