  1. Good Afternoon! Take out a sheet of paper and label it: Activity 13: Geological Evolution of Islands

  2. Hot Spots A concentration of heat in the mantle capable of producing magma, which rises to the Earth’s surface.

  3. Hot Spots

  4. Over time, islands sink and erode

  5. Coral Reefs Grow Around Islands

  6. Symbiotic Relationship Corals have a symbiotic relationship with algae called zooxanthellae. The algae live inside the coral cells to provide glucose for the coral. The relationship is very fragile. Coral Bleaching: When the algae leave the coral polyps and the corals die.

  7. As the islands sink and erode, corals continue to grow! Fringing Reef: Grows directly around the young island Barrier Reef: As the island sinks, a lagoon forms between the island and the reef Atoll: As the island is submerged, the coral reef remains

  8. Coral AtollThe Blue Hole, Belize

  9. Review Questions • How do hot spots provide evidence for the theory of plate tectonics? • If an island chain was formed from a hot spot, would the largest island be the youngest or oldest island and why?
