This case study examines the severe deterioration of concrete due to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exposure in Cary, NC. The outer layer of the concrete showed significant degradation, particularly around the edges, resulting in nearly 1 inch of material loss. Proper surface preparation is critical, requiring sound concrete with a compressive strength of 5000 psi and a 0-degree rotating nozzle at 5 gpm. Following the application of a ½ to 1 inch Quadex Aluminaliner and 120 mils of Raven 405, inspections after 5 years indicated no failures despite high levels of H2S exposure.
