On May 22, 2011, Mercy Hospital Joplin experienced severe destruction from a direct tornado hit that resulted in blown-out windows, damaged infrastructure, and the loss of vital communication systems. With 86 medical offices destroyed and extensive debris throughout the facility, the aftermath prompted significant rebuilding efforts that included emergency preparedness features like reinforced storm-hardened structures and centralized utility controls. Completed in April 2014, the new design emphasizes resilience, safety, and enhanced patient care for the community.
