  4. E.4.1: • CFCl3 + UV Light ==> CFCl2 + ClCl + O3 ==> ClO + O2ClO + O ==> Cl + O2 • The free chlorine atom is then free to attack another ozone molecule • Cl + O3 ==> ClO + O2ClO + O ==> Cl + O2 • and again ... • Cl + O3 ==> ClO + O2ClO + O ==> Cl + O2 • and again... for thousands of times.

  6. E.4.2: • Examples of Ozone Depleting Substances arechlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, methyl bromide, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform.

  8. E.4.3: • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are compounds containing chlorine, fluorine and carbon. CFCs have many uses such as aerosoland refrigerants.

E.4.3: • In order to replace CFCs attempts have been made to develop compounds that have less ozone depleting potential(ODP). • Hydrochloroflourocarbons -Although they break down more quickly in the atmosphere, and have less potential for destroying the ozone they could still damage it if they are overused. • Hydrofluorocarbons-They have no chlorine and therefore won’t break down ozone molecules however, their toxicity is unsafe. • Hydrocarbons-They are cheap and won’t damage the ozone however they are poisonous and flammable.
