  5. What is imperialism? • The policy of establishing colonies and building empires • A stronger nation w/ a goal to create an empire & who dominates weaker nations through various factors

  6. America as a World Power • Please take out your post test reading on the United States becoming a world power and 5 W & How chart—let’s discuss! • (Extras can be found in the bin)

  7. Reasons for American Expansion of Imperialism • So we could sell to new markets • For protection of USA investments overseas • To relive pioneer excitement or Manifest Destiny • To civilize people or “Heathens”

  8. Why would we want to civilize people? • Ethnocentrism! • Belief in the superiority of one’s own ethnic group

  9. The White Man’s Burden • Take out your Imperialism Map (received post-test) and flip to the back. Read “The White Man’s Burden” and answer questions.
