  1. Unit 1 Introduction to Computers Lesson 1.04 Software and Saving

Introduction: Software and Saving • Have there been times when you have forgotten what you named a file, had an error while saving a file, or opened a file and nothing was in the file. • These are common mistakes everyone has made and hopefully when this lesson is finished these mistakes will not occur to you.

  3. Lesson: Software • Tells the computer hardware what to do and how to do it. • Types of software: • System software-like your operating system, helps the computer hardware and software run together so the computer runs correctly • Application software-are the programs that allow you to do other things on the computer besides running the hardware. • Types of software • Word • Excel • Access • PowerPoint • Outlook Adobe Reader

Lesson: Saving Files • When saving files never use the following symbols. < > : " / \ | ? * • These symbols are uses in computer programming and if used you will receive an error message. • All files have software extensions based on the type of software application being used. • Save files in a way you will remember.

  5. Lesson: Software File Extensions • Document – doc, docx (Microsoft Word) • Graphic - bmp • Sound - wav • Database - mdb (Microsoft Access) • Spreadsheet – xls, xlsx (Microsoft Excel) • Web page – html, htm • Programs - exe

Lesson: Definitions • Hardware: physical pieces of a personal computer; the parts of a computer you can see and touch • Peripherals: pieces outside of the tower system unit that allow you to work. • Software: A program that tells computer hardware what to do and how to do it. • Application: computer software designed to help the user to perform specific tasks • Operating System: a type of software that is loaded to your computer that makes the computer hardware communicate or talk to the computer software; it runs your Microsoft Word computer system.

  7. Task 1 • Complete the 1.04 Software and Hardware Graphic Organizer located below this PowerPoint on the B.T.A. PowerPoint page. • Save it to your F Drive in your student folder.

  8. Task 2 • Complete the 1.04 Software and Saving Quiz.

  9. Task 3: Part 1 • Let's see how organized you are. • From now on in the course, you should make a folder (on your computer, server space, flash drive, or disk) for each unit's work. • Save all of your work for the unit to this folder. • At the end of each unit, you should submit a Word document with a screenshot proving that you have set up this folder and are saving your files to the folder.

  10. Task 3: Part 2 • Start by creating a folder with the name Unit 1. • Move all of your work to this folder. • Open the folder so that you can see the folder name in the explorer bar and all of its contents.
