  1. HLS: Lessons Learned and Proposed Changes HLS Formatter GroupShannon White, Pablo Santos, Dave Sharp, Tracy Hansen, Matt Moreland, Matt Volkmer, Matt Belk and Steve Taylor

  2. Season Two Lessons Learned • Abbreviated option still not being used to fullest extent • Overview not required per directive, which can lead to issues for partners • Product length can still be an issue, especially due to different inland and coastal VTEC • Had underlying HLS code issue that caused a failure during Earl

  3. Bug Fixes • Found typo which caused the formatter to fail at OKX during Earl • Found logic errors during Bonnie and Earl which caused some wind wording to be omitted • Other various typos and missing punctuation were discovered • All of these were corrected in-season through patches

  4. Background To give time for things to settle, no major changes to built in templates will be done for 2011. Only changes done will be those in support of actions stemming from items 10-30, 10-40, 10-41, 10-43, and 10-44. A placeholder for baselining the latest HLS is in OB9.3, which has a national deployment of March 15, 2011. So that is the timeline we are dealing with.

  5. Proposed Changes • Make HU and TR hazards the only ones used, regardless of zone. Unified ETN. • Make Overview mandatory and include an optional NEW INFORMATION section in it. • Make NEW INFORMATION optional in segments.

  6. Future Changes Get VTEC out of the HLS Continue to work on built in templates including adding templates for seas and inland flooding Changes after 2011 season must wait for AWIPS II implementation at all sites
