The Camelot Years • Kennedy gives special recognition to American art and culture during his years as president. • Conveyed his charm and wit to the American people through t.v. • First lady influenced fashion and culture. • Kennedy surrounded himself wih young talent, called the “best and the brightest” • Included: McGeorge Bundy, Robert McNamara, Dean Rusk, and his brother Robert.
Promise of Progress • “We stand today on the edge of a New Frontier” • Kennedy set out to transform the broad vision of progress he outlined in his campaign-The New Frontier. • Proposed medical care for the aged, rebuild urban areas, and aid education; lacked votes to pass, however. • Lacked a popular mandate, or clear indication that the voters approved of his plans=play it safe. • Stimulated the economy by using deficit spending-increase gov’t spending and lower taxes for companies and individuals, even if it meant spending more than we had.

Domestic Agenda • B/C of “The Other America”, Kennedy understand why many wanted “Freedom Now!” No longer was the African American community going to allow segregation run their lives. • Kennedy calls for a “national assault on poverty.” • Investigate racial injustices in the South • Civil rights bill/proposal to cut taxes, but…it never happens…
