  1. Helmholtz International Center for FAIR Opportunities for NuSTAR and Accelerator R&D Norbert Pietralla Technical University Darmstadt (TUD) (Institute for Nuclear Physics)

  2. What is NuSTAR ? Basic research in Nuclear STructure Nuclear Astrophysics Nuclear Reactions with beams of short-lived nuclei at energies 0 – 1.5 GeV/u @ FAIR International collaboration for physics with radioactive ion beams at FAIR International collaboration (established in 2003) chair: W.Gelletly, Univ. of Surrey, UK members: > 700 nuclear scientists > 120 institutions > 25 countries purpose: superstructure of 9 experimental collaborations at FAIR including nuclear theory HIC for FAIR aims at an exploitation of the hightech opportunities at the FAIR accelerator complex. The HIC will guarantee a dominant role in selected NuSTAR experiments and theory for Hessian universities, its students, and society. Norbert Pietralla

  3. Motivation for NuSTAR Norbert Pietralla

  4. Motivation for NuSTAR • What are the limits of nuclear existence ? • How does the nuclear force depend on a variation of the proton-to-neutron ratio ? • How do collective nuclear phenomena emerge from nucleons and nuclear force ? • How are complex nuclei formed from the underlying constituents and QCD ? • What nuclei are relevant for cosmic processes and what are their properties ? Norbert Pietralla

  5. HIC for FAIR project areas • Monte Carlo methods • Coupled partial-differential equations • QCD-phenomenology • Detector design, Optimization and R&D • Pattern recognition and Trigger concepts • Large volume data analysis • Accelerator optimization and R&D HIC for FAIR concentrates on strategic NuSTAR activities that complement the expertise of HIC‘s partner institutions. Norbert Pietralla

  6. HIC for FAIR opportunities for NuSTAR HIC for FAIR provides access to NuSTAR experiments, theory, and technology for academic groups and students at Hessian universities Ring Branch - ILIMA - EXL - ELISe Low-Energy Branch: - HISPEC/DESPEC (AGATA) Super-FRS High-Energy Branch - R3B Accelerators (3 examples and following presentation of selected work packages) Norbert Pietralla

  7. Superconducting CH-cavity FAIR Accelerator Physics Physics program requires a high-intensity proton beam Synchrotron RF cavities FAIR requires a reliable injector chain SC LINAC cavities Norbert Pietralla

  8. HIC for FAIR opportunities for Nuclear Masses Will be measured with NuSTAR-ILIMA @ FAIR Involve HIC for FAIR project areas • Detector Design • Accelerator Optimization Norbert Pietralla

  9. Remnants of SN1054 HIC for FAIR opportunities for Supernova Simulation Current status: A spherical supernova does not explode ! Expand from 1-D model to 2-D, 3-D • Nuclear Equation of State • Neutrino transport in matter • Nuclear masses and reaction rates far off stability Norbert Pietralla

  10. Supernova Simulation HIC for FAIR challenge: Supernova simulation consistent with observed r-process abundance • Involve HIC for FAIR project areas • Monte Carlo Simulations (dynamics of SN) • Coupled partial differential equations (nucleosynthesis networks) • QCD-phenomenology (extrapolate masses, Q-values, reaction cross sections) Courtesy: Hans-Thomas Janka Norbert Pietralla

  11. Pattern Recognition: HISPEC/DESPEC AGATA-prototype 2007 Norbert Pietralla

  12. Pattern Recognition: HISPEC/DESPEC AGATA for optimum Doppler-correction and efficiency HIC for FAIR challenge: Gamma-tracking algorithms for HISPEC Gamma-imaging as a potential commercial spin-off. • Involve HIC for FAIR project areas • Large volume data analysis • Pattern recognition Norbert Pietralla
