  2. Reflection • Reflection means: • serious thought or consideration • thinking deeply about things such as faith and belief • reflecting on one’s faith and what it means • Encountering different views can make a person question their beliefs

  3. Worldview • A set of assumptions a person makes about the world • A way of seeing the world and how it works

  4. Does God Exist? • Yes – theism • No – atheism • I don’t know – agnosticism

  5. How People Experience God • Experiencing God means being aware of the presence of a divinity (God). This can happen in a variety of ways: • through religious ceremonies or rituals • through prayer • at certain times in one’s life • in the everyday through other people

  6. Secularism • Secularism is the view that religion should be kept separate from other aspects of everyday life • Religious matters should not influence everyday life, e.g. government, education, etc.

  7. Materialism • Existence can only be explained through physical matter • Material things are more important than spiritual ones • The greatest good is physical well-being and material success • No place for a higher reality or God • Spiritual life is not important

  8. Religious Fundamentalism • A form of a religion that believes in the strict, literal interpretation of scripture, and sees this interpretation as the only valid one • A strict interpretation of faith • A literal understanding of sacred writings

  9. Creation • Theview that a creator was involved in bringing the world into existence • Religious accounts about the beginning of the world and the beginning of humanity do not have the same purpose as modern scientific ones

  10. Purpose of Creation Stories • They are symbolic • They aim to answer important questions about life, such as: • Why are we here? • Why is the world both good and bad? • What is our responsibility in the world? • Could the answers to these questions have important consequences?
