  1. Pacemaker Surgery in India

  2. About Pacemaker Surgery • A pacemaker is a little device that is placed in the chest to help and control heart rhythms that are not normal. Pacemaker uses electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. • Pacemakers are used for the treatment of arrhythmia. In arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm. • In arrhythmia, the heart may not be able to pump enough blood to the body. This can cause symptoms such as fatigue (tiredness), shortness of breath, or fainting. Major arrhythmia can damage the body's vital organs and may even cause loss of consciousness or death.

  3. Type of Pacemaker Surgery in India • Pacemakers generally cure two types of arrhythmias: • tachycardia, a heartbeat that's too fast • bradycardia, a heartbeat that's too slow • Some people need a special type of pacemaker called a biventricular pacemaker, or bivent. You may need a bivent if you have severe heart failure. A biventricular pacemaker makes the two sides of the heart beat in sync. This is known as cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). • People may need a pacemaker for a variety of reasons - mostly due to one of a group of conditions called arrhythmias, in which the heart's rhythm is abnormal.

  4. Why Cardiac resynchronization therapy is done? • Cardiac resynchronization therapy is a treatment for heart failure in people whose ventricles don't contract simultaneously. • If you have heart failure, your heart muscle is weakened and may not be able to pump out enough blood to support your body. This can be worsened if your heart's chambers aren't in sync with each other. • Cardiac resynchronization therapy brings electrical signals that cause your heart to beat in a way that maximizes the amount of blood that's pumped out of your heart. This treatment may reduce your symptoms of heart failure and reduce your risk of heart failure complications, including death.

  5. What you can expect • You'll likely be awake during the pacemaker surgery, though the area where the pacemaker is implanted is numbed and you'll receive medication to help you relax (conscious sedation). The pacemaker surgery typically takes a few hours. • During pacemaker surgery, insulated wires are putted into a major vein under or near your collarbone and guided to your heart with the help of X-ray images. The one end of each wire is secured to the right position in your heart, while the other end is attached to a pulse generator, which is usually implanted under the skin beneath your collarbone.

  6. What a pacemaker does • A surgically implanted electronic pacemaker copies the action of your natural pacemaker. A surgical implanted pacemaker consists of two parts: • The pulse generator • This small metal container houses a battery and the electrical circuitry that regulates the rate of electrical pulses sent to your heart. • Leads (electrodes) • One to three flexible insulated wires are each placed in a chamber of your heart and deliver the electrical pulses to adjust your heart rate.

  7. How does a pacemaker work? • A pacemaker includes of a battery, a computerized generator, and wires with sensors at their tips. The battery gives power to the generator, and both are surrounded by a thin metal box. The wires link the generator to the heart. • A pacemaker helps monitor and control your heartbeat. The electrodes detect your heart's electrical activity and send data through the wires to the computer in the generator. • The computer will direct the generator to send electrical pulses to your heart if your heart rhythm is abnormal. The pulses travel through the wires to reach your heart. • Newer pacemakers take care of your blood temperature, breathing, and other factors. They also can adjust your heart rate to changes in your activity.

  8. Why does anyone need a pacemaker? • A pacemaker is necessary if heart is pumping too quickly or slowly. In either case, human body doesn't get enough blood. This can cause: • fatigue • fainting or lightheadedness • shortness of breath • damage to vital organs • eventual death • A pacemaker regulates your body's electrical system which manages your heart rhythm. An electrical impulse travels from the top of your heart to the bottom, signaling your heart's muscles to contract with every heartbeat. A pacemaker can also find and record your heartbeat.
