  2. Introduction Biofuels are sustainable because they can provide an alternative source of fuel that is renewable. Looking back in time, biofuels tended to utilize less from the environment than fossil fuels because it reduced the ecological footprint between eight and sixteen times compared to fossil fuels. The main use of biofuels is for transport which is a big use in our nation seeing that the majority uses transportation to travel from place to place. Also 75% of that transportation requires fossil fuels which can be replaced by biofuels making transport more sustainable.

  3. Introduction Continued Today biofuels contribute to over twenty percent of all renewable energy consumed in the United States of America. Behind hydro-electric power, biofuels are the largest single contributors then is wood and wind.

  4. Process of Biofuel Creation • To manufacture biofuels you must go through the 6 stages • 1. Filtering: In this process, vegetable oil is used to filter out food particles and the liquid is then warmed up • 2. Removing of Water: Boil the liquid at 100 degrees C for a long period of time • 3.Titration: This is used to find out how much lye will be required to manufacture the biofuel • 4.Preparation of Sodium Methoxide: In this process, sodium methoxide is produced by mixing methanol with sodium hydroxide. • 5. Heating and Mixing: The residue from step 4 is then heated between 120 to 130 degrees F. • 6. Settling and Separation: Once the liquid is mixed let it cool down. Once cooled the biofuel will be found floating at the top while the glycerin is found at the bottom.

History of Biofuels • Biofuels have been used for thousands of years. • First type of biofuels was the burning of wood • Used for survival (cooking & warmth) • In the 1700s, vegetable oils and alcohols • Dr. Rudolph Diesel was the first to experiment with vegetable oils to power diesel engines. • Introduction of fossil fuels reduced the use of biofuels due to lack of efficiency • World War II increased the demand for biofuels due to severe shortage of fuels. • During this time period, ethanol plants were built in mass numbers. • After the war, cheap oil from the Middle East was imported which once again, cut down usage of biofuels. • In 1990, Clean Air Act is passed, and Ethanol production is encouraged and backed by the government with tax incentives. • Rise in atmospheric carbons and increase of oil prices promote biofuels even further.

  6. Biofuels Today • According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, “U.S. production of biodiesel was 135 million gallons in September 2016. Biodiesel production during September 2016 was 7 million gallons lower than production in August 2016.” • Today, Biofuels are being produced by the millions of gallons. • Many countries are mandating the use of renewable energies, biofuels included. • Research is occurring into more efficient and alternative methods of farming crops for biofuels. • Biofuels are one of the renewable energies with a prosperous future.

A company that produces biofuels and bioenergy • Started in 2000 in Las Vegas • Now in Texas, Colorado, and Australia • Patented the Modular Biodiesel Production technology that they use • Began their partnership with the US Navy in 2003 • Their facilities are fully automated • The networks of each facility are linked together so they can learn from each other

Conclusion • Biofuels have been around for hundreds of years • Biofuels were first discovered in 1917 by Alexander Graham • The first biofuels were derived from alcohol • Biofuels produce 20% of all the renewable energy sources in the U.S. • Biofuels are created by completing the 6 step process: • Filtering, removing water, titration, preparation of Sodium Methoxide, heating and mixing, settling and separation • Today biofuels are being used more than ever before • Biodico is a thriving biofuel company that has even partnered with the U.S. Navy and is one of many biofuel-producing companies.

  9. Why Is This Important? • Biofuels are extremely important to the future of the world. • Production is painless compared to extraction and refinement of fossil fuels. (Fossil fuels will run out) • Renewable resource. • Waste is minimal and is recycled or reused for other purposes. • Biofuels are one of the most sustainable methods of renewable energies.
