The Fifth Grade Exhibition What is an “Exhibition”? What is the content of the Exhibition? What is the Exhibition process? What are the parents’ responsibilities? What is the mentor’s responsibility? What is the timeline? How is the Exhibition presented?
What is “Exhibition” The final unit of inquiry required by the IB PYP A student-driven unit of inquiry Demonstrates the use of all components of the IB PYP Transdisciplinary skills, key concepts, student profile, attitudes, and action phase
What is the content of Exhibition? A local or more global issue Students will have a choice of joining a group of students who will explore one of 12-14 issues that are generated
What is the Process of Exhibition? • Phase I • An introduction/ explanation of Exhibition to the students • The selection process of topics • Distribution of student-lead groups to teacher mentors
What is the Process of Exhibition? • Phase 2 • Gathering of research materials, including books, magazines, websites, people interviews, fieldtrips to museums, etc. • Taking an abundance of notes- most notes are taken during classroom time
What is the Process of Exhibition? • Phase III • Development of a “creative component” related to the project • A newspaper, a brief skit, a poem, model, TV commercial, art project, etc. • Students will use the materials and note they have gathered to create PowerPoint presentation to present their exhibition • Plan action to their project
What is the Process of Exhibition? • Phase IV • Students will practice/ refine their presentations and finalize their “creative component” • Students will present their projects to the school and parents over two days and two nights
What are the parents’ responsibilities? • Parent volunteers will be essential to the Exhibition process • Programs, t-shirts, awards, video production, etc. • Parents of group will help with library trips and possible fieldtrips for the entire group that includes their child • Parents will help their child remain on schedule (detailed schedules will be distributed during each phase)
What is the mentor’s responsibility? Teacher mentors will encourage, guide, and suggest ideas during all phases Mentors will meet with their group at regular intervals during school Mentors will report to teachers if any consistent problems occur Mentors will assess each student Students are responsible for their Exhibition projects- not mentors!
What is the timeline of Exhibition? The entire process will take over more than six months Detailed timelines will be distributed to all teachers, mentors, parents and students
How is the Exhibition presented? • The Exhibition will be presented in the form of PowerPoint projects • This is a required task outline by Greenwich Public Schools’ curriculum as necessary activity to be accomplished at least once during fifth grade • There will be a schedule constructed to accommodate parent/ family viewing
And… The Exhibition The Exhibition is the single most comprehensive student-empowering project of all the units of inquiry It is the responsibility of the school, parents, and students to ensure that the Exhibition is an enriching and an exciting learning experience for all Let us all enjoy the process!
