  1. Breaking Down Vocabulary Day 2: Roots

  2. What is a root? Examples?

  3. Root: • A word part that comes from another language • Indicates a word family

  4. How did English Evolve? (video) The roots of the roots…

  5. Video contemplations… • Consider some of these words from our list of roots: • To do, to act, low, to hold, to go, to believe, to run, to say, to lead, equal, even, to bring, to make, to write, to bend, to write, to follow, to appear, to touch, to hold, to stretch, to draw • If you had to come up with a collective category for these words, what would it be? (an adjective) • All of the translation of these Greek and Latin roots are simple yet vital • In other words, they are not the peasant-derived vocabulary words that we use on a familiar level

  6. Roots do several things… • Supply a context for the history of our language • Provide commonalities between familiar words • Give you clues to unlock SAT words you don’t know

  7. Take out a blank page and a pencil.Label the paper 1-10. • You will see a pair or group of words on the screen • Figure out what ROOT the words have in common • Then write what you think the root MEANS

Vocabulary Presentations • In a group of three, you will create • A visual presentation (with Google Presentation, Prezi, PowerPoint, etc.) • A worksheet for your classmates to do to practice these new words • Then, down the road, your group will present your vocabulary words as an introduction each cycle
