  2. Why do we need physical activity? • It help maintain a healthy weight • Reduces blood pressure • Lowers risk for Type 2 Diabetes • In the long haul, it costs less money • Costs to an 18 year old obese through life $549,907 • Makes you happier!

  3. Obesity and It’s Causes • Having a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or higher • Causes: • Inactivity • Poor Diet • Hereditary • Calorie Consumption > Calories Burned

  4. A Growing Nation • 33.8% of all U.S. adults are obese • 17% of children are also obese • In Michigan alone, 30.9% of the population is obese • Approximately 300,000 adults die from obesity-related causes per year

  5. Risks Being Overweight • Heart disease • Cancer • Stroke • Sleep apnea • Osteoarthritis • Lowered self-esteem

  6. What is a barrier? • A barrier is a mental, physical, or measurable “brick wall” keeping you from becoming physically active

  7. Top Ten Barriers • Lack of time • Inconvenient to exercise • Low self-motivation • Find exercise boring • Find exercise unenjoyable • Low self-efficiency • Fear of injury • Lack of goal setting • Lack of support • Lack of resources

  8. Lack of Time • “I don’t have the time in my schedule to work out” • Incorporate 30 minutes atleast 4 times a week • Mesh exercise into your activities • Ex: Do calf raises while sitting at your desk

  9. Low Self-Motivation • “I don’t really feel like working out. I’ll just do it tomorrow or something.” • Something as simple as walking a mile is a good exercise • Join group to workout with like cycling club

  10. Find Exercise Boring/Unenjoyable • ‘I’m not going to run today. It’s just so boring!” • To decrease the chances of quitting exercise, switch up the routine • Play a sport to put some spice into it.

  11. Fear of Injury • “I shouldn’t exercise today. This knee of mine is about to just collapse again.” • Reduce the intensity of your workout • Find exercises that limit the use of hurt body parts

  12. Lack of Goal-Setting • “What would I even get out of it? It takes SO long for anything!” • Becoming physically fit may take time, but stick with it. • Create more long term goals with short goals in-between.

  13. Lack of Support • “My roommate seems to be so persistent on side tracking me from working out. I wish he would just support me.” • Try and find friends/family that is more support and willing to possibly participate

  14. Lack of Resources • “I would work out but those darn gyms are so expensive!” • Find a gym or work out facility with flexible prices • There is most likely a walking/running train provided by the city

  15. Personal Philosophy • Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t just being physically active; but emotionally as well • Factors influencing a “healthy” lifestyle: • Good physical activity • Good self-esteem • Healthy emotional stability • Non-harmful stress relieving
