  1. The AR-15

  2. My Goal • My goal for this 8th grade project was to learn the history of, the purpose and function of, as well as assemble an AR-15 rifle with the help of my mentor. • I had been shooting guns for awhile and I loved shooting. So, when the opportunity came up to be able to learn about a very popular gun and build it for myself I had to jump on it.

  3. History • AR-15= Armalite Rifle- model 15 • Most famous version is the M-16 select fire military rifle. • The AR was introduced in 1957 by the Fairchild Armalite corporation. • Designers= Eugene Stoner, Robert Fremont, L. James Sullivan • In 1959 Armalite sold the design to Colt who then turned around and sold it to the military designated as the M-16. • By 1963 Colt began selling the semi-automatic version designated as the AR-15 to civilians.

  4. History cont. • The rifle underwent numerous modifications over the years as problems developed. These modifications fixed feeding problems, fouling issues, accuracy issues at longer distances and controllability while shooting. • Cleaner ammo was then developed, cleaning accessories were issued, and faster barrel twist rate designs were incorporated to help with heavier ammo.

  5. History cont. • The M16 is used by 15 NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) countries and more than 80 countries world wide. • The US has used the M16 and its variants in every conflict since Vietnam including modern day Afghanistan and Iraq. • While the true number is unknown, more than 10,000,000 M16 and variant rifles have been produced, that number has grown exponentially over the last 10 years thanks to the United States civilian market.

  6. The modern day use of the AR-15 • Self Defense • Competition • Hunting • Sporting • Collecting

  7. Differences of the AR-15/M16/M4 • The AR-15 is semi-automatic as opposed to the M16 fully automatic or M4 burst versions. • Full Auto and burst rifles must have been manufactured prior to 1986 to be legally transferred to civilians and are legal to own under the National Firearms Act of 1934

  8. The Function of the AR-15 • The AR-15 uses a direct impingement system to operate.

  9. Options and Accessories for the Ar-15 • Stock • Hand guard • Bayonet lug • Flash hider, compensator • Pistol grip • Removable magazine • Carry handle • Optics • Suppressor • Flashlight • Laser • Barrel length (16” is shortest legal length unless an NFA gun designated as a SBR (short barreled rifle)) • Iron Sights • Grenade/Flare launcher

  10. Future of the AR-15 • In recent years, the civilian demand for the AR-15 has overpowered the supply. Manufacturers struggle to keep up with demand. • The military maintains a strong need for the AR-15/M16/M4 platform although it is always seeking new weapons such as the FN SCAR and Bushmaster ACR.

  11. My AR-15 • My AR-15 is a .556 caliber with a 16 inch barrel. • Iron sights • Bipod • Adjustable stock • Flash hider • The cost to build this my self was around $500 and if you buy them complete you can get them for about $750- $1,800 depending on the size and caliber.
