  1. “What is a Mineral?”

  2. Minerals are… • 1. Natural • 2. inorganic (non-living) 3. Solid • 4. Crystalline (structure)

  3. How can I tell if something is a mineral? • Answer these four questions: • Is it nonliving material? • Is it a solid? • Does it have a crystalline structure? • Is it formed in nature? --If the answer isn’t “yes” to all 4 questions, then it’s not a mineral!!!

  4. Group Activity! Identifying Minerals • The following pictures are posted: wood, fossil, bone, granite, quartz crystal • Observe the pictures and discuss with your group which ones are minerals by using the four questions. • Write down the names of each item and “yes” if it is a mineral and “no” if it is not a mineral.

  5. BONE WOOD FOSSIL GRANITE QUARTZ CRYSTAL

  6. Mineral Structure • _________ are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. • All minerals contain one or more of the 92 naturally occurring elements. Elements

  7. Most minerals are made of __________ of several different elements. • A compound is a substance made of ___ or more elements that have been chemically ________. compounds 2 combined

  8. Two Groups of Minerals • Write the names of the two groups on the front of the foldable (one on each side). • Use pages 338-339 to take notes on the two groups. • Include the definition of the two groups and examples with descriptions.

  9. Silicate Minerals • Contain a combination of silicon, oxygen, and one or more metals. Mica Quartz Feldspar

  10. Nonsilicate Minerals • DO NOT contain compounds of silicon and oxygen, BUT can contain carbon, fluorine, and sulfur. • Six groups Calcite Fluorite
