Presentation Transcript
Do Now • Complete the questions on the Do Now sheet you picked up today.
Today’s Objective • SWBAT correctly round numbers to the given place value.
FLUENCY! • Yesterday – Mad Math Minute • Using Basic Operations • Today – mathematical language • Using correct terms and phrases
Place Values • What do you notice?
Place Value Practice • Listen for Mrs. Alfuth to ask what digit is in a specific place value. Raise your hand when you know the answer. • 543.216 • 1,255,476.12354 • 0.542361
Rounding Rules • Look at the digit after the place value. • If 4 or less, stays the same. • If 5 or more, goes up by 1. • Fill in 0’s to the decimal.
Exemplar 1 • Round 583.135 to the nearest hundredth.
My turn • Round 1.3572 to the nearest tenth. • Round 2.476 to the nearest whole number.
Exemplar 2 • Round 75.964 to the nearest tenth. • When rounding a 9 up, becomes a 10. Bump up the NEXT digit to the left and 9 becomes 0.
Correct Language • Since it is a goal of ours, I will only accept correct mathematical language. • That means no more “point one four”. • How would we say the number: ? • One hundred twenty-seven • Decimal becomes “and” • Twenty-five hundredths (ends in the hundredths place) • “One hundred twenty-seven and twenty-five hundredths”
Practice Time • Draw a line across your notes beneath the last line you wrote. • Label the next section as “Practice” • You will receive a worksheet of rounding problems. • Question, work and answers should be written in your notes NOT on the worksheet. • You have ________ minutes to complete the practice on code red. • Raise your hand if you have a question.
Exit Ticket • Exit tickets are to be completed INDEPENDENTLY and on CODE RED. • As a reminder, Exit Tickets are 10% of your final grade – they can really help your grade out a lot!
Homework • Create 5 rounding questions (worded like the exemplars). • You must create at least one of each type of exemplar from today (that means at least one rounding a 9 problem). • You need to have both the question and the answer to each question when you come to class tomorrow.
