Two types of Cinderella stories Cinderella • Driven by anxious jealousy of mother or stepmother • Heroine subjected to multiple domestic drudgeries • Wife’s deeds are center of story • Unbearable family situation because of father’s marriage • Heroine is submissive, passive, and compassionate • Can be a male Cinderella • Freud – suppression of hatred for the mother

Two types of Cinderella stories Catskin • Fueled by the sexual desire of the fathers who drive their daughters from home • Father is typically center of these stories • Powerful motive for mother’s rage • Insistence on a verbal declaration of love (King Lear) • Heroine is mobile, active, resourceful • No male counterpart • Freud – suppression of love of father

  4. Commonality Again and again, mothers are the real villains, extracting promises that end by victimizing both father and daughter. Everywhere we look, the tendency to defame women and to magnify maternal evil emerges. (Tatar 105)

  6. Cinderella Assignment Cont. • When told to do so, create a group with people numbered 1-5. • In your groups summarize and discuss your stories. Determine which are Catskin stories and which are Cinderella stories. Discuss major similarities and differences amongst the stories. Be sure to take notes on your findings to use on the test.
