  10. 5-day rain total (Tropical Storm Allison) City of Houston Harris County

  11. Floodplain maps(White Oak Bayou, Houston)

  12. FEMA Map Modernization Program • FEMA is redoing floodplain maps for whole nation over next 5 years, county by county • Spend $1.5 billion on this • Store data and models in server farm in Cary, NC for whole country • How to relate all this to Arc Hydro? • How to quantify the error in floodplain boundaries? Joint project with Dr Hodges

  14. Water Quality

  15. Location of Impaired Waters Waters are “impaired” when their quality is inadequate for “designated uses”, e.g. fishing and swimming

  16. Nueces Bay Zinc in Oyster Tissue TMDL Project Imane Mrini Center for Research in Water Resources The University of Texas at Austin

  17. Atmospheric deposition Wat = 18.67 kg/d NPS watershed loadings Qwsh = 1.83 m3/s Wwsh = 3.69 kg/d Lake Corpus Christi load QNR = 2.47 m3/s WNR = 4.27 kg/d Nueces Bay Permitted discharges Qpd = 16.55 m3/s Wpd = 0.71 kg/d Mean = 37µg/L CP&L plant WCP&L = 52.75 kg/d Inner Harbor Average Conc. (1982-2001) = 37µg/L Zinc loads to Nueces Bay Q = flow of water W = load of zinc Outflow

  18. Bacterial TMDL for Copano Bay • DNA studies to “type” the sources of bacteria in water have been done (animals, humans, birds, etc) • What is the loading of bacteria to the bay from these sources? • How can loading be reduced to make bacterial concentrations acceptable? • TMDL = Total Maximum Daily Load Joint project with Dr Kirisits

  19. New Project Opportunities • FEMA floodplain mapping information – 1 research assistant, funding initially for this year but will likely continue. Sponsor: FEMA • Joint project with Dr Hodges • Bacterial TMDL for Copano Bay – 1 research assistant, funding for 1 year, we’ll need to find a followup project. Sponsor: TCEQ • Joint project with Dr Kirisits • Interface Data Model for HSPF – 1 research assistant, funding for 1 year but will likely continue. Sponsor: San Antonio River Authority

  20. Regional Storm Water Modeling Program and Master Plan for San Antonio City of San Antonio

  21. San Antonio Regional Watershed Modeling System Geospatial Data: City, County SARA, other “Bring the models together” Modeling System Rainfall Data: Rain gages Nexrad Calibration Data: Flows Water Quality Floodplain Management Capital Improvement Planning Water quality planning Integrated Regional Water Resources planning Flood Forecasting

  22. FLOODPLAIN MAP Nexrad Map to Flood Map in Arc 9 Model Builder Flood map as output Model for flood flow HMS Model for flood depth Nexrad rainfall map as input

  23. Interface Data Model for HSPF • Previous work has focused on flooding with HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS models • Moving now to integrate water quality modeling • HSPF – Hydrologic Simulation Program Fortran • Widely used simulation model for water quality modeling • How to connect this to GIS requires detailed design of the interface and developing computer tools to achieve that integration.
