DIAMOND Programme Update • 35 projects = 28 PhDs and 7 postdocs • All individual projects are now filledMajority approx 12-15 months into course of study • Majority of projects have an industrial mentor NNL / Sellafield Ltd / Serco / not an exclusive club • If a project is of interest get in touch Industrial engagement with our students is a key measure of success • Some migration of PhDs 1 from UCL to Manchester (UCL still co-supervising) 1 from Leeds to Manchester (academic move)

  3. DIAMOND Conference 2009 • 2-day event(hopefully attractive to industry) • Interesting location, outside university • Sponsorship (THANK YOU) • Competitively priced at £230 • 120 delegatessuccessful • 60 from industry from 25 different companies

DIAMOND Conference 2009 • 4 oral presentations from industry • 8 oral presentations from PhD students and 5 postdocs • All projects represented with a poster presentation • NDA sponsored best oral and poster presentation • Opportunity to engage with students and academics • Industry exhibit stand (6 off) area

  5. DIAMOND Conference 2010 • Museum Of Science and Industry (MOSI) • Similar format to 2009 • Looking for speakers from industry • Poster session for all • Sponsorship currently being sought • Exhibit area for 6-8 stands • Early bird £235 (31/03/10)catch it while you can!

DIAMOND Training Activity • DIAMOND – NNL Nuclear Training Course24-25 November 2009Royal Armouries, Leeds • Sponsored by NDA • All DIAMOND researchers and academics invited24 from DIAMOND attended (49 total) • Basics of power generation and the nuclear fuel cycle • Course delivered by NNLwith guest lectures from, - Westinghouse - RWMD

  7. DIAMOND Work Package Meetings • WPs held annually around March/April~6 months from annual conference • Allows all WP researchers to get together • Industrial attendance strongly encouraged at these meetings • Next WPs organised are; - 25th March: WP2 @ Imperial College(Decommissioning, Legacy & Site Termination) - 30th March: WP3 @ Imperial College(Materials: Design, Development & Performance) - 29th April: WP1 @ Loughborough(Environment, Migration & Risk)

Additional Funding From NDA • NDA - an additional ~£500k was available • Two additional PhDs sponsored (£75k ea)- Ian Richardson (Leeds), behaviour of cementitious materials - Roy Wogelius (Manchester), uranium in magnesium-rich systems • Possible additional PhD • Access to active facilities – call recently put out • Sponsorship of training course / DIAMOND conference • Future training courses / access to facilities?

Future Activities • DIAMOND Conference, MOSI, 8-9 Sept. 2010 • Training courses – more specific / targetede.g. Ponds and Silos, HALES, HA Waste Vitrification • Liaise with company HR departments • Arrange group site visits • WP meetings • Opportunity to take the lead on 2 books (Springer, Wiley) • Significant publication output as projects begin to matureOpportunity for industry / academia joint publications journals, conference proceedings, magazines – time to make an impact

In Summary • What can industry do to help DIAMOND? • An opportunity for our researchers to liaise with industry on a regular basis - WP meetings, annual conference, regular project meetings • Feedback from industry to maintain relevance to current needs • Keep us informed of employment opportunities - To be distributed to all DIAMOND researchers • Opportunity for relatively easy access to specialist facilities • Sustainability through continuing support
