Many Views of Culture • Culture as Civilization • Big “C” culture: great achievements of a people…art, architecture, music, literature • What are some specific Big “C” culture achievements? • Little “c” culture: customs, traditions, practices that happen every day • What are some other Little “c” cultural practices?

  3. Many Views of Culture • Culture as Communication • Language (verbal/nonverbal) including body movements, eye contact, time, space, smells, touching, internet (texting, email)

  4. Many Views of Culture • Culture as Interaction • Groups compete for power, influence, authority • The insiders and the outsiders…the privileged and the underprivileged • Groups cooperate to benefit each other.

  5. Many Views of Culture • Culture is always changing • Think of the ways that your parents/grandparents lived their lives. • How different is your life?

  6. Many Views of Culture • You are the changers of your own culture. • How do you as an individual change your own culture? • Education • High school, university, global travel, literature, art…

  7. Why Learn Culture? • To make connections with others who seem different • To learn that everyone on earth is a member of the same group…humanity. • Once you make a connection with another person, it becomes hard to hurt them.

  8. How do we learn culture? • The Cultural Experience • Knowing about another person (information) • Knowing how a person practices their own culture (practices) • Knowing why a person does something (perspectives) • Knowing yourself, and why you do the things you do (self-awareness)

  9. Knowing About • Includes everything you learn about a culture • Facts about everything people of another culture do • Example: Imagine you are attending university in a new place. • What will you have to know in order to be successful?

  10. Knowing How • It is important to know how people practice their culture. • Example: Kissing as a greeting (older people) versus Grabbing hands with shoulder bump (young people)

  11. Knowing Why • Understanding why people of another culture do what they do • Values: Why people believe in things • Values often produce good beliefs, but they can also create negative stereotypes. • Example: Muslims as terrorists

  12. Knowing Yourself • Why do you do the things you do? • What are your reactions to another culture? • It is important to know your own cultural values, opinions, and ideas. • What makes you Kuwaiti? • What makes you Arab? • What makes you Muslim?

  13. The Cultural Collage • Consider the items on your Cultural Collage Worksheet • Categorize them as: • Cultural Information (Knowing About) • Cultural Practices (Knowing How) • Cultural Perspectives (Knowing Why) • Cultural Awareness (Knowing Yourself)
