  3. Sanitation • A clean, pleasant store is Article II of the “DeCA Customer Bill of Rights” • Overall clean appearance is first impression on customers – They deserve it • Areas with big “payoffs” are floors, shelves, display counters, restrooms

  4. Safety • Safety is everyone’s job • Employees and customers benefit

  5. IG Inspections • Inspect what you expect • Keep standards high • Inspector General is there to help you • Compliance to DeCA’s high standards sets us apart from our civilian counterparts

  6. Litigation • Management must aggressively act to stop harassment, discrimination & retaliation Courts are starting to assess liability for supervisory/ management deficiencies in failing to correct problems that arise between employees Lack of Communication • Demise of civility • Failure to listen/hear • Forgetting the “Golden Rule” applies to employees • Creating perception of a lack of respect Failure of leadership/supervisory accountability Manager’s focus on mission outputs • Ignoring the people issues until the problem is severe • Viewed as tacit approval of action, making us vulnerable for significant liability We’re getting better but sensitivity still needed We must get serious— • Management anti-discrimination training • Timeliness in taking appropriate actions • Holding mediocre and incompetent supervisors, managers, & resource providers accountable in a real way We cannot continue to rationalize a managers' conduct because a problem employee is a poor performer • Or by saying, “That’s just [name of supervisor]”
