Facilities • NYU Paris Academic Center • NYU Parishas approximately 230 undergraduate students (NYU freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and students from other colleges and universities) and about 25 NYU Graduate Students. • The Academic Center features classrooms, a library with computers and wireless internet, a student lounge, and a charming garden with tables. It is located in the Passy neighborhood in the 16th Arrondissement.

  6. Important Academic Information: • NYU Paris is a rigorous academic program. • Attendance is expected and required. Absences will negatively effect your grade. • No missed tests or quizzes may be made up. • Do not book travel before the first day of class.Field trips/site visits are often organized on Fridays and are considered required class time. • Required reading (books and course packets) will be available locally. More information will be provided in on-site Academic Orientation.

  7. Course Registration • Average course load = • 16 credits, composed of: • the 0-credit “Global Cultures” course • at least ONE French language course • The LS Core of Writing I, Social Foundations I, and Cultural Foundations I • None of these classes can be taken pass/fail.

Language Course Placement/Registration • Students who have never taken any French will enroll in Intensive Elementary French. • Students with some to advanced French Study • Students with AP, IB, or SATII scores will be given guidelines later this summer on what to register for. • Students who have some French study in their background but no test scores will the on-line placement test and use the results to place themselves. We’llsendyou the linklaterwithour registration instructions. • No language placement exams will be offered at NYU Paris. • Questions? Contact Amanda Herold-Marme: agh214@nyu.edu.

Academic Orientation and Advising at NYU Paris • NYU Paris course offerings and registration procedures will be covered in detail during the MANDATORY academic orientation. • MANDATORY on-site academic advising during orientation. Opportunity to modify or confirm course choices (depending on availability). • Add/drop for in-house courses through Friday, September 20th.

  11. Billing • As with any semester, you will receive an E-bill for your tuition, registration, and fees. E-bills are always sent to your NYU Email account. • Freshmen students will be charged an estimated Housing charge that is then adjusted within a few weeks of the beginning of the semester. • Please know that you can give another person access to your E-bill. Visit www.nyu.edu/bursar for details. Tuition payments must be sent directly to the NYU Bursar’s Office. • Please note: some non-NYU students may see an “Anticipated 3rd Party” credit.

  12. Getting the Visa: Part One STEP 1: Must have a valid passport. Does not expire before December 2014. STEP 2: Register on-line with CampusFrance now. Allow three weeks to process. • You must have a valid passport for this registration. • Admission letter used for the application. (Note about image file.) • STEP 3: Book online appointment with French Consulate NOW • Date between June 15-July 31st • Should be made at least 4 weeks in advance

Getting the Visa: Part Two Important Notes: • We provide the academic and housing attestations in your welcome packet, along with proof of enrollment • If you are not using the NYC consulate, be sure to check your consulate’s website for instructions. • If you are not a US citizen, check the French Embassy website to see if you require a visa for France. • Make copies of all documents (when you receive them, when you submit them, when you receive your visa, and before your departure) and take everything to consulate (with THREE copies). • Make sure you leave your appointment with your OFII form and that you hold onto it—you’ll need it when you arrive in France!

  14. Arrival Information All students must arrive on September 3rd!If you arrive before you will be responsible for your own accommodations. Late arrivals are not permitted. • On September 3rd, report to assigned check-in location by 5pm at the latest. • Assigned check-in location and directions will be sent by email in August. Print and bring this with you in your hand luggage! • Upon arrival, it may be several hours before you are able to contact your family via phone or email. Tell them what to expect! • If your flight details change last minute, email the Paris staff nyu-in-france@nyu.edu or ls.abroad@nyu.edu.

Orientation Orientation is MANDATORY! • NYU Paris Policies & Guidelines • Practical Info (cell phones, metro cards, using public transportation, etc.) • Housing Assignments • Academic Orientation & Advising • Administrative Matters (banking, administrative formalities, etc.) • Health & Safety • Presentation of Cultural Activities • Walking Tours

Freshman Housing in the 11eme Residence Republique • Laundry • Small gym • Internet in the residence (ADSL cable) • Bustling diverse neighborhood in the 11th arrondissement, with groceries and post office nearby • 40 minute commute to the academic enter Furnished studios • En suite kitchenettes • En suite bathrooms with showers • Pots, pans, shower curtains supplied

  17. Banking • NYU will help you open an HSBC account if you decide you need one • Bank of America and HSBC clients will find BNP Paribas and HSBC banks where they can withdraw without fees in Paris • There are limits on daily and weekly withdrawals for any banks you will use in Paris • To open a bank account, you will need to • 1) Have a copy of your passport; • 2) Fill out a form that will be given to you once you arrive in Paris; and • 3) Your attestation de scolarité that can be found in your acceptance packet • 4) Utility bill from home (either under your name or parents’ name)

  18. Computer Information COMPUTER LAB AND LAPTOP COMPUTERS : • The NYU in France Center is equipped with computer terminals • If you have your own laptop computer, we strongly advise you to bring it to Paris. We have a WIRELESS NETWORK throughout the Center. • The student residence also has internet access through ADSL hook-up. Cables are provided by the residence hall.

  19. Health & Safety Plan for your health needs in advance! • Bring a full supply of daily prescription medicine you take. You cannot ship medication internationally! • Bring copies of your medical prescriptions, eye-glass prescriptions, and allergy information. • If you require regular shots or other medical attention, you MUST be in touch with NYU in Paris’s Wellness Coordinator, Dr. Cynthia Mitchell, before arrival (cynthia.mitchell@nyu.edu). • If you receive on-going counseling and will seek counseling abroad, contact the NYU Wellness Exchange before departing (212-443-9999, wellness.exchange@nyu.edu) • Students with special needs MUST contact the Office for Students with Disabilities at NYU’s Henry + Lucy Moses Center (212-998-4980, www.nyu.edu/osl/csd)

  20. Health Insurance • All students attending NYU Paris will have HTH Global Health Insurance coverage while abroad. • Free of charge (NYU provides) • HTH guarantees payment to doctors, and cost of prescriptions is reimbursed. • Comprehensive directory of English-speaking doctors worldwide • Students should consult site staff if they need help making a doctor’s appointment • REMEMBER to register with HTH when you receive the email and bring a copy with you!!! • You must bring HTH registration card (can be printed from website) with you to doctor’s / hospital visits. • Do NOT cancel your domestic health insurance. You will need that, too!

Culture & Customs • The French tend to be more reserved than many Americans, and have different standards of politeness or friendliness. • The French take eating very seriously; you will seldom see them eating “on the go” and NEVER (hardly ever!) in the Métro! • Most French people feel strongly about keeping abreast of current events in France and in the rest of the world, and don’t hesitate to discuss politics, religion, or other “touchy” subjects! • It is considered rude not to greet people when entering a shop, classroom, or even an elevator. Always say “Bonjour” and “Au Revoir” upon entering and leaving. • LGBTQ community is accepted.

Preparing to Live in a New City • You might find yourself getting a bit anxious as you get closer to the date of your departure. • It’s natural to be nervous before moving to new surroundings. • Some steps you can take to prepare can be found at: • www.nyu.edu/global/culturaladjustment • 1 -- View the “What is Culture” Webinar • 2 -- Plan how you will Reflect on the Experience before arrival, during, and after you return • Blogging • Facebook • Personal Journal • 3 – Research the culture you will experience by logging into GlobeSmart : GlobeSmart is a web-based cultural awareness training tool which provides quick and easy access to extensive knowledge on how to engage effectively with people from countries around the world.

  25. Final To-Dos • DO NOT SHIP: Medication, Vitamins, Electronics, Toiletries, Cosmetics, New Clothing, High-Value Items. When shipping, always mark the package as containing “used personal goods” (affaires personnelles usagées). • Things to pack: Adapters, Prescriptions & Medication, Comfortable shoes, clothes that can be layered. • See “Packing Do’s and Don’ts” in your Acceptance Packet • Banking: Contact your bank to let them know you will be abroad in various parts of Europe, and to inquire about any ATM or miscellaneous fees
