  1. Elementary Math at CES May 7, 2014

  2. Pa Core Standards and Math • Shifts in Mathematics • More emphasis on reasoning, problem solving, modeling, decision making, and engagement • More emphasis on connecting practice standards with content standards

  3. K-2 Emphasis • More emphasis on: • Numeration and place value (understanding numbers) • Mastering addition and subtraction facts and concepts • Composing and decomposing shapes and numbers (visualization)

  4. enVision MATH: • engages students as it strengthens their understanding of math. • uses problem based interactive learning and visual learning to deepen conceptual understanding. • incorporates bar diagram visual tools to help students be better problem solvers. • provides differentiated instruction to ensure success for every student !

  5. Some “Core” Vocabulary • Standards- define what students should understand and be able to do • Domains- groups of related standards

  6. enVision MATH in action Let’s take a peek at the K-2 Curriculum!

  7. Kindergarten Domains Domain 1: Counting and Cardinality Comparing and Ordering Numbers to 5 Numbers to 10 and to 20Domain 2: Operations and Algebraic ThinkingUnderstanding addition and subtractionDomain 3: Numbers and Operations in Base Ten Composing and Decomposing numbers 11-19Domain 4: Measurement and Data Sorting, Classifying, Counting and Categorizing DataDomain 5: Geometry Identifying and Describing Shapes Position and Location of Shapes Comparing and Composing Shapes

  8. Learning to Add in Kindergarten

  9. Adding

  10. Grade One Domains Domain 1: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Apply relationships between addition and subtraction Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction Domain 2: Numbers and Operations in Base Ten Understand and apply place value concepts Domain 3: Measurement and Data Measure lengths using standard units Work with time Represent and interpret data Domain 4: Geometry Identify 2-and 3-D shapes and apply understanding of shapes and their attributes to solve problems

  11. Grade One- Learning Centers • Aligned to Pa Core Curriculum • Reinforce enVision lessons • Provide for differentiation (2 levels) • Encourage students to problem solve, work cooperatively, and talk about math.

  12. Grade Two Domains Domain 1: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Understanding Addition and Subtraction Addition and Subtraction Strategies Domain 2: Numbers and Operations in Base Ten Place Value to 1,000 2 and 3 digit Addition and Subtraction with Regrouping Domain 3: Measurement and Data Counting Money, Measuring Length and Telling Time Graph and Interpret Data Domain 4: Geometry Recognize, identify and draw 2 and 3 dimensional shapes

  13. Learning Place Value in Second Grade Place Value lesson

  14. From the Students’ Perspective Students share math thoughts

  15. Conclusion Thanks for the opportunity to share a brief summary of K-2 mathematics and the new enVisionMATH program. Are there any questions?
