Background • Santa Ana, Mt.View, Santa Clara, Monterey, California - Concepts for city wide organizationMost are directly connected to city. • Neighborhood Associations • Group of residents and business representatives • Devote time and energy to improve and enhance a well-defined geographic area • Provide a place to meet neighbors, exchange ideas, identify projects, and implement plans for the neighborhood 4/21/04

  3. Background • Neighborhoods usually organize to: • Build a sense of community in the neighborhood • Address a particular issue • Provide the neighborhood with an effective communication link with city departments • Empower residents to work together improving their neighborhood 4/21/04

Neighborhoods Involved • Arbor Cove Residents • Beach Hill • Branciforte Area • Carbonara Neighbors • Downtown Neighbors • Harvey West Association • High / Highland Streets • Lighthouse Cowells • Lower Seabright • NOLO – Neighbors of Lower Ocean • Nobel Dr Neighbors • Mission Street Extension • Prospect Area • West Cliff Drive Association • Westlake Neighbors Association 4/21/04

Santa Cruz Neighbors • Established in Sept. 2002 • Allows Neighbors to NETWORK, Connecting Assets and capabilities in the neighborhoods • Many neighborhoods have similar issues – can work together, learn from each other • Crime prevention • Cut-through traffic • Speeding • Litter and graffiti • Parking issues • Independent from city government • NOT a political based organization • Gives a neighborhood voice to the city department directors 4/21/04

Partnering with City - NST • Initiated in 1999 – based on other successful community based models • But had no way of communication to the neighborhoods • Provide interdepartmental response to neighborhood issues • Santa Cruz Neighbors has input and output from meetings with NST – Open 4/21/04

SCN Partnering with NST • Survey neighborhood issues, Discussions, educational sessions with city officials • SCN on subcommittees to help resolve issues and insure neighborhoods have voice • Historically City has not looked at issues from a neighborhood perspective • Clean up in Neighborhoods – examples • Bixby St., Beach Hill Stairway Modification, Beach Flats Neighborhood Meetings, Graffiti Abatement • Beat Health Team efforts 4/21/04

Santa Cruz Neighbors is a city-wide organization that represents a network of neighborhoods which teams with educational institutions, local government, and local businesses, dedicated to a “community” orientated government and provides a neighborhood voice for the residents of Santa Cruz. Goal to have ALL neighborhoods represented Meetings every 3rd Tuesday –at 7pm Currently at Santa Cruz Police Department Community Room Santa Cruz Neighbors 4/21/04

  13. The First Meeting • Get to know neighbors • Sign in List - addresses, phone #’s, emails are a must • Neighborhood Survey • Individual Surveys – Assets in the neighborhood • Identify Street Mayors, Core Support Group • Set next meeting 4/21/04
