OUR EXPERIENCE @ UNILAG • INFRSTRUCTURE: • SETTING UP CITS, AN IT COORDINATING AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT UNIT (harmonises all IT related units into a single umbrella) • CAMPUS-WIDE NETWORK WITH FIBER OPTICS AS BACKBONE, (See Fig.1 next slide; THE CORE NETWORK IS DEPICTED IN Fig. 2) • STRUCTURED LAN FOR ADMINISTRATIVE AND ACCADEMIC BUILDINGS • WEBSITES, AND SUBDOMAINS: www.unilag.edu.ng • INTRANET, FOR CIRCULATION OF LOCAL MAILS; AND AIDS IN SHARING LOCAL RESOURCES • POWER- PROVISION OF LOCAL GENERATORS; AND INVERTERS @ THE HUBS, WITH BACKUP CAPACITY OF BETWEEN 12 ~ 24 HOURS • SECURITY: TRADITIONAL METHODS SUPPORTED BY CCTVs

REQUIREMENTS Contd • HUMAN CAPACITY BUILDING: • TRAINING: (i) MANDATORY COMPUTER LITERACY TRAINING FOR ALL STAFF, (except cleaners and labourers and the likes) (ii) CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT FOR TECHNICAL CITS TECHNICAL STAFF, ESPECIALLY IN NETWORK MANAGEMENT, APPLICATION DEVLOPMENT AND SUPPORT, AND OPEN-SOURCE PLATFORMS; etc • LABTOP OWNERSHIP SCHEME FOR BOTH STAFF AND STUDENTS @ REDUCED PRICE AND HIREPURCHASE • KEYING IN INTO THE STEB PROJECT: A WORLD BANK PROJECT • ENFORCING IT COMPLIANCE UNIVERSITY POLICY:

  8. REQUIREMENTS Contd • BANDWIDTH (i) BANDWIDTH SHARING BANDWIDTH AGGREGATION-BULK PURCHASE, THEN RETAIL/DISTRIBUTE egBANDWIDTH CONSORTIUM (ii) EKOKONNECT-mirrors BANDWIDTH AGGREGATION, BUT goes further to serve as LOCAL: NATIONAL INTRANET, And RESEARCH and EDUCATION NETWORK

  9. REQUIREMENTS Contd • INTERNET USAGE POLICY: (i) SPELLS OUT THE DOs and NOTs IN THE USSAGE OF THE UNIVERSITY INTERNET FACILITIES; and SANCTIONS (ii) ENFORCES SANCTIONS
