BLIP Operations March 4-11, 2013

In March 2013, a target failure for Sr-82 was noted on March 4. To assess potential volatile impurities in RbCl material, a target was heated in a furnace at 6500°C, resulting in no observed swelling. We reverted to the mechanical array used last year, which features larger cooling water gaps to enhance performance. Routine production of Sr-82 resumed on March 6 at a high current of approximately 105 µA, with no issues reported since then, indicating a successful recovery from the previous failure.

  1. BLIP Operations March 4-11, 2013 • Target failure of both Sr-82 targets was detected on March 4. To check for volatile impurity in RbCl material we heated a target in a furnace at 6500C, but observed no swelling. We reverted to target mechanical array of last year that has larger cooling water gaps. • Routine production of Sr-82 at 117 MeV resumed on March 6 at high current (~105µA). No problems so far.
