  2. A memo could be A note to self to help you remember something A standard format for giving information from a boss to a group of people in a company Purpose of a Memo To solve a problem To give new information To persuade the reader to do something To change a procedure What is a Memo?

  3. Parts of a Memo • Heading TO: (Reader’s name and job title) FROM: (Your name and job title) DATE: SUBJECT: (A few words that tell what the memo is about. Sometimes the words subject is replaced by the letters RE, which is short for reason.)

  4. Parts of a Memo • Opening statement • One or two sentences that give an overview purpose for the memo • This is very similar to a thesis statement • This helps set the tone for the rest of the memo – informative, angry, scolding, congratulatory, etc.

  5. Parts of a Memo • Body Paragraph(s) • This is where you give all of your supporting material, offer your explanations, and/or make requests • Only make it as long as necessary – don’t babble on like in a letter • Conclusion • “Thank you for your understanding…” etc.

  6. Few More Memo Tidbits • All of the parts should be lined up against the left hand side of your paper • Always type memos • Put one space between each part • No need to sign or write your name at the bottom of the memo since it is already in the heading
