  1. APIC-Virginia Strategic Plan2012 - 2020

  2. APIC-VA: Vision • It is the vision of APIC-Virginia to lead the way toward healthcare without infection.

  3. APIC-VA: Mission • The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc., Virginia Chapter (APIC-VA) is a multi-disciplinary voluntary organization. Our purpose is to create a safer world through the prevention of infection and embrace this bold direction through patient safety, implementation science, competencies and certification, advocacy, and data standardization.

APIC-VA: Strategic Priorities • Goal 1: Develop a standard that requires a set number of Infection Preventionists in the acute care setting. • Goal 2: Demonstrate and support effective infection and control as a key component of patient safety. • Goal 3: Promote and facilitate the development and implementation of scientific research to prevent infection.

APIC-VA: Strategic Priorities (continued) • Goal 4: Define, develop, strengthen and sustain competencies of the IP across their career span and support board certification in infection prevention and control (CIC) to obtain universal adoption in the U.S. and Canada. • Goal 5: Influence and facilitate legislative, accreditation and regulatory agenda for infection prevention with consumers, policy makers, health care leaders and personnel across the care continuum. • Goal 6: Promote and advocate for standardized, quality and comparable HAI data.

  6. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan Goal 1: Develop a standard that requires a set number of Infection Preventionists in the acute care setting. Objectives: 1. Get team from state membership to initiate research on evidence-based practices to obtain required data to start this endeavor. 2. Collaborate and align with SHEA members, APIC (national) and other key organizations to develop this standard.

  7. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 1 (continued) 3. Work with APIC (national), legislative and other key groups to get the proposed standard approved. 4. Educate organizations on this new standard. 5. Write and publish this endeavor for our state chapter.

  8. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan Goal 2: Demonstrate and support effective infection prevention and control as a key component of patient safety. Objectives: 1. Collaborate and align with key infection prevention and public health organizations, agencies and consumer groups to demonstrate and promote effective infection prevention programs. 2. Define key processes of care that are shown to prevent infection.

  9. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 2 (continued) 3. Develop framework to optimize partnership between physicians and IP’s as part of infection prevention programs. 4. Create tools that integrate elements of the science of safety into infection prevention programs. 5. Identify and assess measures that demonstrate the impact of infection prevention as part of patient safety.

  10. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 3: Promote and facilitate the development and implementation of scientific research to prevent infection. Objectives: 1. Demonstrate the value of implementing the science of prevention to members. 2. Identify gaps in the research agenda and address the gaps. 3. Publish research in newspaper to aid in education. 4. Collaborate with related disciplines and organizations in promoting implementation science research.

APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 4: Define, develop, strengthen & sustain competencies of the IP across their career span & support board certification in infec- tion prevention & control (CIC) to obtain universal adoption in the U. S. & Canada. Objectives: 1. Support APIC in the development of APIC IP competency model and program for the career span. 2. Promote the value of CIC certification to key stakeholders, regulators, consumers and accreditors.

  12. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 4 (continued) 3. Support APIC in creating advanced recognition programs for the IP who has achieved advanced/expert level of knowledge and skills.

APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 5: Influence and facilitate legislative, accreditation and regulatory agenda for infection prevention with consumers, policy makers, health care leaders and personnel across the care continuum. Objectives: 1. Advance the development and adoption of meaningful use and measurable HAI reporting measures which minimizes collection burden. 2. Support and advocate for resources that promote effective infection prevention and control efforts, programs and initiatives.

Promote active IP participation and collaboration with organizational leadership of providers, consumer advocacy groups, and payers to enhance infection prevention and control on all levels and points of care. 4. Identify pertinent regulatory and legislative issues through information provided by National Office, literature and medical reports. 5. Monitor General Assembly activity for bills which impact our practice.

  15. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 5 (continued) 6. Communicate urgent issues via email to the membership so that timely responses can be generated to legislators. 7. Maintain visibility of APIC-VA with the legislature and communicate with legislators as appropriate.

  16. APIC-VA: Strategic Plan(continued) Goal 6: Promote and advocate for standardized, quality and comparable HAI data. Objectives: 1. Support and participate in the strategic planning for advancing the description, collection and reporting of HAI data. 2. Collaborate with government and private sector partners in initiatives supporting standardized and validated data for state reporting. 3. Advocate for expansion and interoperability of the electronic medical record (EMR) and standardized extractible infection data elements for state reporting.
