  2. 6.1 Define terms related to conflict resolution/team building 1. adversity-state or condition contrary to well being 2. compromise – coming to an agreement in which each person gives up something in order to get what they both want 3. conflict – any struggle, disagreement, or fight 4. conflict resolution – the process of settling a conflict by cooperating and problem solving 5. defense mechanism - methods people unconsciously use to deal with life situations; used to hide or balance one’s feelings or actions 6.mediation – a process in which a neutral third party is used to help reach a solution that’s agreeable to both sides

  3. 7. negotiation – the process of discussing problems face-to-face in order to reach a solution 8. peer mediator – a person who acts as a third party between two students who are locked in a conflict 9. prejudice – an unfair or biased opinion based on false or insufficient information 10. team-a cooperative unit 11. tolerance – the ability to overlook or accept things you do not agree with; accepting and respecting other people’s customs and beliefs 12. trust – a firm belief in the honesty and reliability of another person

  4. 6.2 Identify ways to solve conflicts(any struggle, disagreement, or fight) • Conflict resolution ( the process of settling a conflict by cooperating and problem solving) is beneficial for both the family and work environment. • Types of Conflict • situational conflicts • personality conflicts • power struggles

  5. ARBITRATION (conflicting partiessubmit differences to the judgment of an impartial person) • Define the conflict • Choose the arbitrator • Present both sides • Allow time for a decision • Accept the resolution

  6. Speak the truth Provide positive feedback Brainstorm possible solutions Use effective body language Define the problem Listen Respect others Use self-control Take turns talking Control your voice COMMUNICATION

DEFENSE MECHANISMS (methodspeople unconsciously use to deal with life situations; used to hideor balance one’s feelings or actions) 1. compensation- using a substitute method than planned to achieve a desired goal 2. daydreaming- escaping from real life situations through wandering thoughts and fantasy 3. denial- refusing to believe facts 4. displacement-transferring an emotion that is connected to one situation to another situation 5. identification-imitating a favorite personality instead of expressing one's own individuality 6.projection- blaming other people or things for one’s own failures or problems

  8. 7.rationalization-giving excuses for one’s failures or weaknesses 8. regression- reacting to frustration and defeat by reverting back to a less mature stage of development 9. direct attack-attacking the source of the threat, “lashing out” 10. conversion-transferring the energy of a desire you cannot express into a physical system or complaint 11. idealization-when you value something far more than its worth 12. giving up-feeling that all efforts to achieve goals have been blocked

  9. LEGISLATION(a proposed or enacted law) • New laws or rules are made to resolve the conflict

  10. LITIGATION (proceedings used to settle a dispute) • Seek legal proceedings • Present your dispute before the law • Accept the decision or appeal it to a higher court

MEDIATION (a process in which a neutral third party is used to help reach a solution that’s agreeable to both sides) Choose neutral ground Intake/gather information Storytelling-each person tells their side Discuss issues Brainstorm for solutions Make an agreement Some schools use peer mediator (a person who acts as a third party between two students who are locked in a conflict) programs for conflicts among students

  12. Be prepared Meet on neutral ground Practice what you preach Don’t rush judgment Be objective Be flexible Know what you are willing to give Know what you are willing to take NEGOTIATION(the process of discussing problems face-to-face in order to reach a solution)

  13. Compromise (coming to an agreement in which each person gives up something in order to get what theyboth want) is crucial in the reconciliation process. Agree to peacefully disagree RECONCILIATE (to reach an agreement, settlement, or compromise)

  14. TOLERANCE(the ability to overlook or accept things you do not agree with; accepting and respecting other people’s customs and beliefs) • One aspect of tolerance is the elimination of prejudice(an unfair or biased opinion based on false or insufficient information)

  16. 6.3 List advantages of teamwork versus working individually • Members bring different knowledge and skills to the team • Distributes the workload • Fosters participation and involvement (ownership) • Decreases errors/mistakes • More ideas are generated • Promotes creativity • Problem-solving skills are learned • Enhances success DVD-”Cool Runnings”
